« Culture de l’inceste » ? C’est trop fort, trop violent ? Cette formule, adaptée de l’expression « culture du viol », elle-même définie dans les années 70 par les féministes américaines, n’est pourtant pas une provocation. Ayant été confrontés à des situations rares où des enfants sont nés de l'inceste, nous approchons cette notion non pas du seul point de vue de la psychiatrie mais par l'apport pluridisciplinaire des sciences sociales, de l'art ou du droit. L'objectif est de sortir de la confusion inhérente à ces familles. En France, sans pour autant avoir d'étude précise, au moins deux millions de personnes sont concernées. Il s'agit donc d'un tabou largement transgressé. Nous abordons dans un premier temps les références à l'inceste dans les textes mythologiques, en passant par les textes religieux pour finir par les textes de loi contemporains. Nous constatons que la place de l'interdit est de plus en plus réduite actuellement. Nous revenons ensuite sur les différentes réflexions qui tendent à comprendre l'origine de cet interdit. Il n'en ressort pas de théorie générale capable d'expliquer son application dans tant de sociétés. La complexité et l'ambivalence de la notion apparaît également dans les représentations qu'en fait l'art. Enfin, à travers l'étude de plusieurs cas cliniques, nous observons qu'il n'y a pas non plus de psychopathologie spécifique liée à cette notion. Au final, quel que soit la manière d'aborder ce tabou, même dans les cas particuliers d'enfants nés de l'inceste, il échappe continuellement à une définition univoque, à une prise en charge codifiée. Contending that the study of hagiography is significant both for a consideration of medieval literature and for current theoretical debates in medieval studies, this book considers a range of Old French and Anglo-Norman texts, using modern theories of kinship and community to show how saints' lives construe social and sexual relations. Focusing on the depiction of the gift, kinship and community, the book maintains that social and sexual systems play a key role in vernacular hagiography. Such systems, along with the desires they produce and control, are, it is argued, central to hagiography's religious functions, particularly its role as a vehicle of community formation. In attempting to think beyond the limits of human relationships, saints' lives nonetheless create an environment in which queer desires and modes of connection become possible, suggesting that, in this case at least, the orthodox nurtures the queer. This book thus suggests not only that medieval hagiography is worthy of greater attention but also that this corpus might provide an important resource for theorizing community in its medieval contexts and for thinking it in the present.
