Antonia Mercé, stage-named La Argentina, was the most celebrated Spanish dancer of the early 20th century. Her intensive musical and theatrical collaborations with members of the Spanish vanguard -- Manuel de Falla, Frederico García Lorca, Enrique Granados, Néstor de la Torre, Joaquín Nín, and with renowned Andalusian Gypsy dancers -- reflect her importance as an artistic symbol for contemporary Spain and its cultural history. This book also traces the evolution of the Spanish Dance technique, marked as it is by a turbulent history. Antonio Triana was a dancer of mature artistry, dignity and power. His physical and technical achievements went beyond what is generally known about Spanish Dance. His dance presented the essence of the Spanish character and, in his choreography, he used his traditional background for his brilliant inspirations. He partnered the legendary La Argentinita, Pilar Lopez and Carmen Amaya with spirit and gallantry. Over the years he developed a very distinct method of teaching and he became one of the foremost Spanish Flamenco dancers and teachers of his time. Rita Vega de Triana formed the Triana Ballet Español with her late husband. She currently teaches Hispanic dance and related subjects at the University of Texas at El Paso and directs her own school as well as performing around the United States as a guest artist and choreographer.

L'ensemble de cette thèse s'articule de manière constante autour de préocupations d'ordre esthétique,historique,sociologique et anthropologique au travers d'une étude analytique. Elle établit un classement par familles rythmiques des pièces dansables du répertoire flamenco. Chaque famille comporte une étude de ses principes généraux d'un point de vue rythmique et chorégraphique. Chaque pièce du répertoire ou "palo" comporte une étude d'un point de vue musical et chorégraphique. L'étude musicale comprend la description du chant au travers des paramètres de ses couplets,les "coplas",et la description du "toque" de la guitare : changements d'accords,jeu de la main droite et placements des temps forts. Une transcription musicale de base vient illustrer ces propos dans le second volume. L'étude chorégraphique comprend une description du caractère de la danse,la définition de sa structure de base et une analyse esthétique au travers d'un ou plusieurs documents audiovisuels. Ce dernier point d'étude définit,pour chaque exemple,la structure de la danse analysée et le nombre de cycles rythmiques dont se sert l'interprète pour chaque partie structurelle. L'étude comporte des commentaires en rapport à l'interprétation chorégraphique.

Mira ! Los zapatos rojos, premier jalon de sa collaboration avec le plasticien Pedro G. Romero, le solo s'impose à Israel Galván comme une nécessité d'être devant l'héritage flamenco qu'il porte en lui. Il le ramène au fondement éthique du flamenco, una forma de ser, autrement dit un mode d'être. Défiant toute posture artistique, il s'agit d'une mise en jeu de soi au travers du geste vocal ou dansé. A l'écoute de cette pratique, Israel Galván réévalue la danse flamenca dans sa conception de numéro, élaborée à l'époque des cafés cantantes (cafés concerts), encore présente aujourd'hui dans le cuadro flamenco (spectacle à numéros chantés, dansés et instrumentaux). Israel Galván de los Reyes (Séville, 1973) apprend la danse dès l'enfance avec son père, le danseur José Galvàn, et sa mère, la danseuse Eugenia de los Reyes. En 1994, il entre dans la Compania Andaluza de Danza dirigée par Mario Maya. Dès 1998, Israel Galván présente ses propres créations. Une trajectoire peu commune commence, jalonnée par l'obtention des prix les plus prestigieux du flamenco et de la danse. En 2005, il reçoit le Premio nacional de Danza - domaine de la création - attribué par le ministère de la Culture espagnole pour sa capacité à générer dans un art tel que le flamenco une création nouvelle sans oublier les véritables racines qui l'ont nourri jusqu'à nos jours, et qui le constituent comme un genre universel". Dix créations voient le jour entre 1998 et 2008. Elles définissent une étape fondamentale dans l'évolution de la danse et de la création chorégraphique flamenca.
