Excerpt from book: II MY FATHER I Have incidentally mentioned that my father was the doctor of Villanova. As a matter of fact, he practiced his profession more for love than for money, having a comfortable income from three large farms which we owned in the vicinity of the village. Those farms had belonged to our family for generations. They were rented out, but part of the rent was paid us in produce and my father had quite a little to say about the cultivation of the land and the raising of cattle. This gave him something to do, especially in the good season. We spent the winter in Turin and moved out to the country early in the spring, when active life begins in the fields. While in Villanova, he practiced medicine as an extra occupation. He did it on the humanitarian principle of contributing his share of knowledge to relieve the miseries of the people among whom he was born and whom he loved. Everybody knew him within twenty miles of Villanova, everybody knew his horse Cianin. At the time I am talking of, he had to a great extent reduced his practice, as the task of caring for the family was taking most of his time. Still, during the summerthe people from the village and the country around came to consult him, for they had great confidence in his advice. He had an office on the ground floor of the house, and the patients waited for their turn out in the garden, where a few rustic benches were set for their accommodation. We children stopped our playing now and then to have a chat with those simple people and to hear from them their tales of woe. They talked about their diseases, using the most unscientific expressions to describe them. Fire in the throat, worms in the stomach, poison in the liver, bugs in the brains, were among the most common troubles that afflicted the crowd. I mu...

A tale of four people trapped by their addictions, the basis for the acclaimed Darren Aronofsky film, by the author of Last Exit to Brooklyn. Sara Goldfarb is devastated by the death of her husband. She spends her days watching game shows and obsessing over appearing on television as a contestant—and her prescription diet pills only accelerate her mania. Her son, Harry, is living in the streets with his friend Tyrone and girlfriend Marion, where they spend their days selling drugs and dreaming of escape. When their heroin supply dries up, all three descend into an abyss of dependence and despair, their lives, like Sara’s, doomed by the destructive power of drugs. Tragic and captivating, Requiem for a Dream is one of Selby’s most powerful works, and an indelible portrait of the ravages of addiction. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Hubert Selby Jr. including rare photos from the author’s estate.

“A wonderful read—with all of a fairy tale’s leaps and turns and queer, vivid images” by the author of the international bestseller Raise the Red Lantern (The Observer). In Peach village, crying was forbidden. But as a child, Binu never learned to hide her tears. Shunned by the villagers, she faced a bleak future until she met Qiliang, an orphan who offered her his hand in marriage. Then, one day, Qiliang disappears. Binu learns that he has been transported hundreds of miles and forced to labor on a project of terrifying ambition and scale—the building of the Great Wall of China. Unwilling to live a life without him, Binu courageously decides to find and save her husband. Inspired by her love, she sets out on an extraordinary journey toward Great Swallow Mountain with only a blind frog for company. What follows is an adventure unlike any she could have ever imagined, in this “gripping, insightful . . . tragic tale of female strength and ultimately, love” (Time Out).

Our Lady Of The Turks written by Carmelo Bene and has been published by Contra Mundum Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-31 with Fiction categories.

Carmelo Bene (1937-2002) was a notorious Italian actor, writer, and director who inaugurated his theater in 1959 with Camus' Caligula then exploded onto the artistic scene with his outré Christ '63. Later, he collaborated with Pasolini, Glauber Rocha, Bussotti and others as well as philosophers, like Gilles Deleuze. His novel Our Lady of the Turks (1964) recounts the bizarre, eccentric rituals of a young actor on a knightly quest, in the manner of the Crusaders, to hone his art so that he may ultimately become an idiot, if not a saint. C.B. describes Our Lady of the Turks as the jeu de cartes of a perverse novel on the idiolect. It is an amusing and merciless parody of "interior life," risibly entrusted to the third-person narrative form: a monody peopled by a thousand and one voices. A setting and a vision of a south of the south of the saints (the "homegrown" baroque, the Moorish kitsch of a palace, the cathedral-ossuary of the Otranto martyrs, etc.), "crusts" summoned to feed an ethnic fire... The music is elsewhere. The only novel in C.B.'s prodigious oeuvre, Our Lady of the Turks was (re)elaborated on stage (1966; 1973) and in images in an eponymous film, which Bene calls "a 1968 film, or better yet, the 'anti-1968 film' par excellence [that was] misunderstood to the bitter end." Translated by Carole Viers-Andronico, this is the second in a series of three separate volumes of Bene's writings that Contra Mundum will publish. As one of the only true 'spiritual' heirs of Artaud, Anglophones must at last reckon with Bene's genuinely radical transvaluation of every form of aesthetics.
