Cet ouvrage est consacre a l'etude de la distinction linguistique entre noms massifs (lait, mobilier, desordre, amour...) et noms comptables (chat, equipe, combat, chose...). Les premiers sont normalement invariables, tandis que les seconds s'emploient librement au singulier et au pluriel. Apres avoir etabli qu'il s'agit bien d'une distinction morpho-syntaxique, l'ouvrage discute la possibilite de caracteriser semantiquement cette distinction. Les recherches existantes ne tiennent compte, essentiellement, que des noms s'appliquant au domaine materiel. Ce travail, au contraire, examine en detail aussi bien les noms concrets qu'abstraits. Il propose de redefinir les proprietes souvent attribuees aux noms massifs (references distributive et cumulative), grace, notamment, a une nouvelle notion de partie. Concernant les noms comptables, il montre qu'aucune propriete purement semantique n'est necessaire pour qu'un nom soit de ce type. L'ouvrage se termine par l'analyse des conversions (emplois massifs des noms comptables, et vice versa), et du role qu'y jouent les facteurs pragmatiques.

La linguistique française fourmille d'approches syntaxiques diverses. Ces trente dernières années, la contestation de la limite phrastique s'est développée sur plusieurs plans, du fait de la difficulté de la définition de l'unité et de l'irruption de l'oral et des dimensions énonciatives et pragmatiques. Cela a conduit à l'élaboration, à côté de la morphosyntaxe traditionnelle, des linguistiques du texte et du discours, des linguistiques de l'énonciation, ainsi que d'une syntaxe trans-phrastique - la macro-syntaxe -, qui visent à répondre aux apories héritées du modèle traditionnel - réduit dès lors au statut de « micro- ». Le colloque (« Modèles syntaxiques », Bruxelles, mars 2003), et l'ouvrage qui en est tiré, font le point sur les recherches en syntaxe à l'aube du XXIe siècle, en prenant le temps de la (re)découverte des modèles dans lesquels les syntacticiens d'aujourd'hui puisent leurs outils d'analyse. Le format proposé était le suivant: à partir d'un bref corpus oral et écrit, les conférenciers, que l'on a choisis représentatifs de différentes approches, devaient chacun déterminer une question à traiter, introduire le modèle utilisé et y inscrire leur analyse. Cela a débouché, au final, sur un colloque de dialogue, dont cet ouvrage se veut le reflet.

This book reimagines the compositional semantics of comparative sentences using words such as more, as, too, and others. The book's central thesis entails a rejection of a fundamental assumption of degree semantic frameworks: that gradable adjectives like tall lexicalize functions from individuals to degrees, i.e., measure functions. Alexis Wellwood argues that comparative expressions in English themselves introducemeasure functions; this is the case whether that morphology targets adjectives, as intaller or more intelligent; nouns, as in more coffee, more coffees; verbs, such as run more, jump more; or expressions of other categories. Furthermore, she suggests that expressions that comfortably and meaningfully appear in the comparative form should be distinguished from those that do not in terms of a general notion of "measurability": a measurable predicate has a domain of application with non-trivial structure. This notion unifies the independently motivated distinctions between, for example, gradable and non-gradable adjectives, mass and count nouns, singular and plural noun phrases, and telic and atelic verb phrases. Based on careful examination of the distribution of dimensions for comparison within the class of measurable predicates, she ties the selection of measure functions to the specific nature and structure of the domain entities targeted for measurement. The book ultimately explores how, precisely, we should understand semantic theories that invoke the "nature" of domain entities: does the theory depend for its explanation on features of metaphysical reality, or something else? Such questions are especially pertinent in light of a growing body of research in cognitive science exploring the understanding and acquisition of comparative sentences.
