In "Giovinezza", in "Lord Jim" e in "Cuore di tenebra" Charles Marlow aveva raccontato le vicende di personaggi annientati dall’incontro con il destino. Il caso è la storia di Flora de Barral, giovanissima figlia di un banchiere rovinato dalla speculazione (dopo avere a sua volta rovinato migliaia di investitori): finendo in carcere questi fa della ragazza una diseredata, senza altro diritto che la compassione. Ed è la storia di come questa creatura esile, silenziosa e ostinata lotti per resistere all’«infatuazione del mondo», e alle attenzioni «di persone buone, stupide, coscienziose». Di come la devozione di un uomo, il capitano Anthony, le sembri all’improvviso una salvezza possibile. Di quello che un lungo viaggio in mare può nascondere, e un matrimonio può rivelare. E della tragedia cui tutto ciò, inevitabilmente, conduce. Eppure "Il caso" è anche un romanzo felice, che per la prima volta conquistò a Conrad schiere di lettori entusiasti: uscito nel 1913, fu il suo unico vero successo popolare. Strano destino, per un libro che è in realtà un lungo e complesso tentativo di rispondere alla domanda che tormenta allo stesso modo Conrad, Marlow e il capitano Anthony: se davvero abbia avuto senso giocarsi tutto pur di afferrare, anche solo per un attimo, «un filo di nebbia».
