This book details a 15-year theoretical and practical research study that destroys the clichés of creative processes and inaugurates a reflective sociology on serendipity. In today’s highly innovative organizations, creative processes are proceduralized in the form of techniques and give rise to routine phenomena. This text hybridizes paradigms such as Donati’s relational sociology, the Luhmanian systemic approach, Von Foerster’s radical constructivism, Sennett’s ideas on the craftsman, the ideas of Wittgenstein and Searle on language, and the ideas of Dummett and Goedel on logic, as well as Hofstadter’s on artificial intelligence. Drawing on over 600 works, including essays and articles, the currents of thought of scholars who have dealt with the topic are identified here. The 200 techniques surveyed present common elements, such as common meta-rules of opposition, combination, and separation that determine creative behavior and are triggered by a recursive but paradoxical relationship between thought and language.

Aspects of the turbulent rule of Richard II freshly examined. The reign of Richard II is well known for its political turmoil as well as its literary and artistic innovations, all areas explored by Professor Nigel Saul during his distinguished career. The present volume interrogates many familiar literary and narrative sources, including works by Froissart, Gower, Chaucer, Clanvow, and the Continuation of the Eulogium Historiarum, along with those less well-known, such as coroner's inquests and gaol delivery proceedings. The reign is also notorious for its larger than life personalities - not least Richard himself. But how was he shaped by other personalities? A prosopographical study of Richard's bishops, a comparison of the literary biographies of his father the Black Prince, and Bertrand du Guesclin, and a reconsideration of Plantagenet family politics, all shed light on this question. Meanwhile, Richard II's tomb reflects his desire to shape a new vision of kingship. Commemoration more broadly was changing in the late fourteenth century, and this volume includes several studies of both individual and communal memorials of various types that illustrate this trend: again, appropriately for an area Professor Saul has made his own. A renowned art critic of the 1960s, Carla Lonzi abandoned the art world in 1970 to found Rivolta Femminile, a pioneering feminist collective in Italy. Rather than separating the art world luminary from the activist, however, this book looks at the two together. It demonstrates that even as Lonzi refused art, she articulated how feminist spaces and communities drew strength from creativity. The eleven essays in this book document the artistic and feminist circles of postwar Italy, a time characterised both by radical protest and avant-garde aesthetics, using primary and archival sources never before translated into English. They map Lonzi's deep connections to the influential Italian Arte Povera movement, and explore her complicated relationship with female artists of the time, such as Carla Accardi and Suzanne Santoro. Carla Lonzi's written work and activism represents a crucial, but previously overlooked, feminist intervention in traditional art history from beyond the Anglo-American canon.
