Droite et gauche apparaissent souvent comme des notions périmées, incapables de refléter la réalité de la vie politique du début du XXIe siècle. Sans doute se répand aujourd'hui le sentiment que ne subsiste qu'une manière de gouverner, arrimée à la quête de la croissance et à des compromis parfois hasardeux. A ce titre, la question de la pertinence de ces concepts mérite d'être posée. Les familles politiques regroupées sous ces étiquettes ont évolué au fil des ans, se sont emprunté certaines revendications, ont collaboré aussi. Le corps doctrinal de la droite des années 1830 ou 1850, dans l'ensemble des pays dits occidentaux, épouse des contours très différents de ceux qui caractériseront la droite des années 1900 ou 1950. Il en va de même pour la gauche. Les idées politiques qui définissent les principaux courants politiques ont souvent connu des parcours sinueux : le libéralisme fut logé d'abord à gauche avant de soutenir des idées qui seront classées à droite plus tard. Et qu'en est-il du conservatisme, notion fort complexe ? Le socialisme, enfin, a lui aussi connu maintes divisions qui modifieront constamment, sinon son positionnement sur l'échiquier politique, du moins son contenu idéologique. Le présent ouvrage défend la thèse que, malgré les transformations qu'ont subies droite et gauche entre les XIXe et XXe siècles, ces deux notions n'ont rien perdu de leur valeur. En survolant l'histoire des idées qui les composent, il tente de démontrer que ces deux balises permettent de mieux comprendre les combats politiques qui déterminent souvent, qu'on le veuille ou non, notre quotidien. Il y a toujours eu une gauche et une droite, et cette réalité ne changera pas. Seuls leurs contenus bougent. Qu'en sera-t-il pour l'avenir ? Les mutations actuelles, articulées sur les bouleversements provoqués par le numérique, risquent-elles de changer la donne ? Ou assisterons-nous plutôt à une nouvelle modification de ce binôme par lequel s'éclaire la réalité politique des États démocratiques ?
