El primer objetivo de este libro es trazar la trayectoria que ha seguido la tradición neoclásica para construir sus teorías económicas. Esas teorías se sostienen sobre cuatro piezas analíticas que, entrelazadas, forman el siguiente enunciado: el mercado de competencia perfecta proporciona un sistema de precios que garantiza el equilibrio económico y genera crecimiento en equilibrio. Con dichas piezas, las sucesivas versiones neoclásicas han creado una colección de procedimientos lógicos que son internamente consistentes porque se han desarrollado a partir de unos postulados inverosímiles, que expresamente se han establecido para aplicar determinadas técnicas cuantitativas.Las teorías neoclásicas han pretendido explicar el crecimiento de las economías capitalistas desde unas premisas estáticas y referidas a decisiones individuales, mientras que los procesos reales son agregados, dinámicos y cíclicos. Así pues, el análisis de la intra-historia neoclásica permite poner de manifiesto su irrelevancia para explicar los principales fenómenos que caracterizan el comportamiento real de las economías.El segundo objetivo del libro consiste en indagar cuál es el entramado de factores que explica por qué –a pesar de esa irrelevancia– se ha mantenido el dominio académico de la tradición neoclásica a lo largo del último siglo y medio.El propósito último de este trabajo es abrir ventanas intelectuales que contribuyan a evitar que nuevas generaciones de universitarios se formen en una visión escolástica del análisis económico dedicada a fabular sobre un universo inexistente, radicalmente extraño al que tiene lugar en la vida real de las economías.

Financial capital continues to dominate Western economic organisations, despite major financial and economic crises. While these have not affected Latin American countries in the same way, other economic problems emerged after the reversion of loose monetary policies that debilitated the export-led growth model. This book discusses the issue of the financialised globalisation model in Latin America, looking at the region’s relationship with the international market. This edited collection is divided into three main sections. The first section discusses regional trends highlighting issues of trade and payments in financialised economies, the impact on deindustrialisation, its effect on inequality, external capital movements and monetary policies. The second section analyses the failure of comparative advantages of the export-led model in Colombia, Argentina and Mexico. Finally, the last section deals with the growth of financial balance sheets in small and developing economies such as Chile; how growth, investment and big corporation evolution were affected in Brazil and Mexico; and the effects of foreign exchange activity in Mexico. Through these discussions, this book aims to deepen the understanding of the crisis of financialisation and the export-led model, raising the question of whether it is possible for this model to continue or if it requires major readjustments to unfold economic growth. This book provides a distinctive analysis of the financialisation mechanisms in developing countries in order to emphasise affinities and differences between the countries of the region in productive and financial terms.
