La Eneida, el gran poema épico de Publio Virgilio Marón (Andes, Mantua, 70 a. C.-Bríndisi, 19 a. C.) que no pudo terminar, exalta los orígenes del pueblo romano a través de Eneas, héroe troyano de estirpe divina, y narra sus viajes y las guerras que hubo de sostener para establecer su linaje en el Lacio. La influencia de Homero es evidente y las referencias a la Ilíada y la Odisea, constantes; pero su finalidad concreta era conseguir que los romanos estuvieran orgullosos de serlo, que se sintieran herederos de los dioses y de los héroes que habían forjado su historia nacional, y, sobre todo, exaltar la figura de Augusto como materialización y eclosión del glorioso destino de Roma. A Virgilio nunca le satisfizo plenamente su obra; trató de destruirla y en su testamento prohibió su publicación, pero el emperador Augusto lo impidió.

Considerada como la obra cumbre de la literatura latina, y hasta la Antigüedad tardía como obra ejemplar, fue un encargo del emperador Augusto con el fin de glorificar el Imperio, atribuyéndole un origen mítico. Virgilio toma como punto de partida la guerra de Troya así como la destrucción de esa ciudad hasta la fundación de Roma a la manera de los mitos griegos. Se narran los viajes de Eneas hasta llegar a Italia y las conquistas posteriores. Dice la tradición que Virgilio leyó a Augusto y a su hermana Octavia la obra y que la mención de Marcelo en el Canto VI causó el desmayo de Octavia. Virgilio trabajó en esta obra desde el año 29 a. C. hasta el fin de sus días (19 a. C.). Se suele decir que Virgilio, en su lecho de muerte, encargó quemar la Eneida por considerar que la obra aún no había alcanzado la perfección buscada.
