Los jóvenes adquirieron un lugar protagónico a lo largo del siglo xx como actores ligados a las dinámicas de modernización sociocultural. A partir de la reunión de materiales dispares, desde archivos institucionales hasta películas, grabaciones musicales y expedientes policiales, Valeria Manzano examina cómo la juventud pasó a ser una categoría central, cuyos representantes se contaron entre los actores culturales y políticos más dinámicos de Argentina desde el derrocamiento del segundo gobierno de Perón hasta el golpe militar de 1976, pasando por las revueltas de mayo de 1969. ¿Cómo se la entendió, debatió y reguló en esos años de fuertes convulsiones políticas y transformaciones culturales? ¿Cuál fue el rol de la educación secundaria y universitaria, cada vez con más alcance entre los jóvenes de distintas clases sociales? ¿Qué cambios implicaron los nuevos consumos culturales, las novedosas prácticas de esparcimiento, la progresiva erotización del cuerpo femenino y las nuevas identidades? En este trabajo se analiza como fueron construidos discursivamente los procesos sociales estructurantes de la juventud de la decada del ochenta en Argentina, a partir de la musica y del rock en particular. Luego del desarrollo del contexto historico-politico, en el que se hace hincapie en las consecuencias que dejo la dictadura militar de la decada anterior, se abordan los discursos que impartian de las instituciones para dar cuenta de como se plasmaron en la sociedad con la llegada de la democracia y el derrumbe economico que empobrecio al pais entre los anos 1987 y 1989. Si bien de modo central se toma como analisis el espacio de las columnas de rock de la revista Humor, por haber sido un hito puntual en aquella juventud, no se deja de lado el dialogo con otras publicaciones, entrevistas o voces representativas de los ochenta, para enriquecer el analisis de los procesos de la epoca.

This social and cultural history of Argentina's "long sixties" argues that the nation's younger generation was at the epicenter of a public struggle over democracy, authoritarianism, and revolution from the mid-twentieth century through the ruthless military dictatorship that seized power in 1976. Valeria Manzano demonstrates how, during this period, large numbers of youths built on their history of earlier activism and pushed forward closely linked agendas of sociocultural modernization and political radicalization. Focusing also on the views of adults who assessed, and sometimes profited from, youth culture, Manzano analyzes countercultural formations--including rock music, sexuality, student life, and communal living experiences--and situates them in an international context. She details how, while Argentines of all ages yearned for newness and change, it was young people who championed the transformation of deep-seated traditions of social, cultural, and political life. The significance of youth was not lost on the leaders of the rising junta: people aged sixteen to thirty accounted for 70 percent of the estimated 20,000 Argentines who were "disappeared" during the regime.
