This prize-winning study examines the historical interplay of racial identity, nationality, and family formation in Cuba from the 18th century to today. Since the 19th century, there have been two opposing perspectives on Cuban racial identity: one that frames Cubans as white, and one that sees them as racially mixed based on acceptance of African descent. For the past two centuries, these competing views of have remained in continuous tension, while Cuban women and men make their own racially oriented decisions about choosing partners and family formation. Cuba’s Racial Crucible explores the historical dynamics of Cuban race relations by highlighting the role race has played in reproductive practices and genealogical memories associated with family formation. Karen Y. Morrison reads archival, oral-history, and literary sources to demonstrate the ideological centrality and inseparability of "race," "nation," and "family," in definitions of Cuban identity. Morrison also analyzes the conditions that supported the social advance and decline of notions of white racial superiority, nationalist projections of racial hybridity, and pride in African descent. Entre el 19 y el 21 de mayo de 2010 tuvo lugar el Seminario Internacional: Las Otras Voces de la Independencia: Sectores Populares, Afrodescendientes e Indígenas en la Independencia de Colombia, organizado por la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, sede Medellín, en conjunto con la Corporación Afrocolombiana de Desarrollo Social y Cultural Carabantú. Planteado en el contexto de las celebraciones del Bicentenario de la Independencia de Colombia, este evento tuvo dos propósitos. En primer lugar, estuvo dirigido a crear un diálogo entre los académicos que hubieran contribuido a estudiar la participación de los afrodescendientes e indígenas en la historia de las independencias en Colombia y, en segundo lugar, buscó propiciar un encuentro entre el saber producido por la academia y los saberes y experiencias de líderes afrodescendientes e indígenas locales, cuya lucha por el reconocimiento de sus derechos políticos en el contexto de la nación ha sido constante hasta la actualidad. El convenio que hizo posible que la Universidad Nacional y Carabantú se convirtieran en socios estratégicos en la organización de este seminario se constituyó en un pequeño paso hacia una forma diferente de concebir el saber histórico y sus usos. Esta experiencia intentó poner en contacto dos lenguajes que poco o ningún diálogo han mantenido entre sí. Este aparente extrañamiento puede delinear varios contornos. El primero es un contorno temporal. El lenguaje del historiador habla del pasado y esto puede llevarlo a construir una narrativa que se abstiene de cualquier vínculo con el presente, produciendo un ejercicio de memoria histórica cerrada sobre sí misma y sobre sus pruebas argumentativas. Los líderes comunitarios construyen un discurso del presente que no se cierra sobre sí mismo porque apela siempre a una memoria del tiempo pasado.
