Aquest llibre copsa el batec de la ciutat de Tortosa durant un dels períodes més desconeguts de l'època contemporània: la guerra dels Set Anys o Primera Guerra Carlista. A l'inici d'aquell conflicte, Tortosa no solament era la població més important de l'àrea de l'Ebre i de l'entorn proper, sinó també una de les capdavanteres de Catalunya. És un greu error d'apreciació pensar que aquesta ciutat de l'Ebre —pel fet que es lliurà dels reiterats atacs amb què els carlistes castigaven altres poblacions del territori ebrenc (Gandesa, Móra d'Ebre, Amposta...) i que mai no va ser ocupada pels revoltats— no va experimentar els efectes i tota la cruesa d'aquella guerra civil. Ben al contrari, el cost humà, econòmic i social que per a la ciutat suposà aquell conflicte s'acabà convertint en un pesat llast per a la seua història posterior. A l'àrea geogràfica de l'Ebre, Tortosa va esdevindre el bressol del primer carlisme, no solament pel considerable nombre de veïns que li donaren suport —entre els quals destaca el cabdill Ramon Cabrera—, sinó perquè des d'un principi va ser el rovell de l'ou on es coïen tots els plans d'aquesta altra alternativa dinàstica. Per això, un dels objectius de l'autor ha estat estudiar i analitzar l'aparició i l'arrelament inicial del carlisme a Tortosa durant aquell període històric, no solament per al coneixement de la mateixa història de la ciutat, sinó també dels orígens d'aquesta opció política en aquest territori i la seua importància en el context general de Catalunya.
