Si le musée veut rester pertinent, il doit composer avec ces paradoxes et sa propre métamorphose, en intégrant le doute et la mise en débat au coeur de ses expositions. Depuis une vingtaine d’années, le thème des migrations est en vogue dans le milieu muséal, comme en témoigne la création de musées des migrations en Amérique du Nord, en Australie ou en Europe. Cet intérêt est stimulé par un contexte favorable aux migrations et à l’immigration en particulier. Il répond aussi à des enjeux sociaux et politiques contemporains. L’ouverture des frontières, le développement des outils de communication, des transports et des technologies ont favorisé les migrations, poussant certaines sociétés d’accueil à se redéfinir et à chercher des façons d’assurer l’intégration des nouveaux venus. Des nations nées de l’immigration ont pour leur part interrogé l’histoire des migrations, notamment pour construire une mémoire collective qui reconnaisse la pluralité des appartenances à l’origine de la construction du récit national. En tant que lieux de médiation, de conservation et de transmission du patrimoine collectif, les musées d’histoire et de société n’ont pas échappé à cette tendance.
