The volume comprises the proceedings of the study days in the Faculty of Architecture (29-30 April 2004) broken down into four thematic sections: The original characteristics of the Florentine school, From Higher School to Faculty, the Florentine school and the contributions from outside, Contemporary metamorphoses. The contributions focus the phases of formation and evolution of the Higher School (1926) and later Faculty (1936) of Architecture, underlining the most significant passages, starting from the initial consolidation of the didactic structure and the emergence of a "Florentine school" characterised by the two strands traceable to Raffaello Fanoni and Giovanni Michelucci. A parallel experience is provided by the contribution of the external teachers, in particular of the Roman school, with lively and at times conflicting approaches. The present situation, albeit with the necessary disciplinary dialectic, features a settlement of the divergences around themes of the relations between architecture, environment and landscape.

Il volume raccoglie gli Atti delle giornate di studio sulla Facoltà di Architettura (29-30 aprile 2004) articolate in quattro sezioni tematiche: I caratteri originari della scuola fiorentina, Da Scuola superiore a Facoltà, La scuola fiorentina e gli apporti dall'esterno, Metamorfosi contemporanee. I contributi mettono a fuoco le fasi della formazione e dell'evoluzione della Scuola Superiore (1926) e poi Facoltà (1936) di Architettura, sottolineando i passaggi più significativi, a cominciare dal primo assestamento della struttura didattica e dal profilarsi di una "scuola fiorentina" caratterizzata dai due filoni che fanno capo a Raffaello Fanoni e a Giovanni Michelucci. Una vicenda parallela è data dall'apporto dei docenti esterni, in particolare della scuola romana, con vivaci e a volte contrastate sollecitazioni. L'approdo contemporaneo, pur nella necessaria dialettica disciplinare, vede una composizione delle anime originarie intorno ai temi del rapporto fra architettura, ambiente e paesaggio.

The first monographic publication focused on the Florentine UFO group (1968-1978), that conducts a historical analysis of its work, reveals its close relationship with the contemporary artistic, literary and architectural avant-garde and, finally, investigates its legacy for the contemporary project. The contemporary context is defined by a unique conjuncture. On one hand, we witness the revival of the Radical Architecture that from the avant-garde experiments of the origins recovers creative processes and iconographic fragments while nullifying the original ideological and political values. On the other hand, we see social protests in defense of fundamental rights of democracy, as in 1968. With these premises, Architecture is now reinvestigating those ephemeral experiments that have endured half a century as new “stone monuments” capable of indicating new perspectives for both research and design. Placing UFO group, one of the authors of those still poorly known “monuments”, at the core of the contemporary debate means investigating their formal and seductive aspects, but also the ideological, political and social values with which objects, installations and happenings have been innervated, transforming them into devices of an architecture nourished by literature, art and political commitment for the foundation of an eloquent and activist project even more radical than the well-known Superstudio and Archizoom. The collaboration between Beatrice Lampariello, an architecture historian specialized in the 1960s and 1970s, and False Mirror Office, a group of historians and designers engaged in the rediscovery of UFO group, lead to a monograph focused on the UFO’s work and an evaluation of their legacy relative to contemporary architecture. This monograph is composed of three sections: 1) History, a first-ever study of UFO by False Mirror Office via analysis of all archival and bibliographic sources, as well as a series of interviews with UFO members and a collection of its writings (published and unpublished), for the first time translated into English; 2) Context, composed of essays by historians and architectural theorists (Beatrice Lampariello, Simon Sadler, Anna Rosellini, Giovanni Galli, Jacopo Galimberti) intended to place UFO’s work in the context of the avant-garde that influenced its work, from the experience of Florentine Radical Architecture to Umberto Eco’s theories on semiotics and the American experiences between Pop Art, Video Art and Happening; 3) Legacy, articulated through graphic contribution and essays by young designers, as False Mirror Office, Parasite 2.0, Point Supreme, Jimenez Lai, Andrew Kovacs, Adam Nathaniel Furman, Traumnovelle, (ab)Normal and Peter Behrbohm, to investigate UFO’s legacy relative to the contemporary revival of the most distinguishing creative processes and obsessions that shaped the so-called Radical Architecture. The 1960s and 1970s saw a marked change in the approach to built heritage conservation. From a focus on the preservation of individual buildings, attention turned to the conservation, regeneration, and reuse of entire historic districts. A key player in this process was the Belgian art and architecture historian Raymond Lemaire (1921–1997), yet beyond those in conservation circles few people know of his work and influence or even recognize his name. In this book, Claudine Houbart traces how the change came about and the role played by Lemaire. She describes his work and influence and in so doing provides a history of urban conservation over the last four decades of the twentieth century and beyond. The first chapter summarizes Lemaire’s background from his training during the Second World War and his work as a Monuments Man immediately after the war, to his role in the drafting of the Venice Charter and his appointment as Secretary General of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). The next chapter describes the rehabilitation of Great Beguinage in Louvain. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project was directed by Lemaire and is a perfect example of the restoration of an entire district. The following chapter provides case studies of his work in Brussels, demonstrating his methodology in action. The final chapter discusses the transposition of the model of the historic city to urban projects and summarizes Lemaire’s influence on heritage conservation today, particularly integrated conservation. His participation in drafting key conservation documents sponsored by the Council of Europe, UNESCO and ICOMOS, and his desire to revise the Venice Charter are discussed. The book’s conclusion reflects on what has gone before, ending aptly with Lemaire’s own words ‘the past, properly understood, is one of the references for judging the value of today and tomorrow’.

Nel panorama dell'architettura del dopoguerra, la tendenza verso un linguaggio internazionale innesca un processo di omologazione, che si concretizza nella fulminea diffusione del new brutalism e del curtain wall attraverso paesi e continenti. L'architettura italiana, pur risentendo di questo travolgente fenomeno e delle mode che ne derivano, conserva tuttavia propri, originali caratteri nazionali. Il ripudio dei modernismi autarchici dell'anteguerra è netto, ma non apre la strada all'importazione dei modelli preconfezionati all'estero. Succede che all'esigenza di un radicale rinnovamento espressivo si contrapponga un'ineluttabile continuità nelle pratiche: della progettazione e, soprattutto, della costruzione artigianale (dato il rinvio di prefabbricazione e industrializzazione). Da questa tensione deriva una nuova stagione di sperimentazione, che si svolge sul campo, opera dopo opera. Nascono così i realismi, gli storicismi, gli espressionismi, per cui i modernismi della ricostruzione e del miracolo economico continuano a distinguersi dall'International Style. Su episodi di tale sperimentazione vertono gli studi raccolti in questo libro; privilegiando, come sempre in questa collana, l'opera costruita. Il volume è a cura di Pier Giovanni Bardelli, Antonio Cottone, Franco Nuti, Sergio Poretti, Antonello Sanna.
