No es exagerado afirmar que Louis Althusser fue el filósofo comunista más célebre de la Francia del siglo xx. Tanto su profesión como sus inclinaciones políticas lo condujeron por caminos más que originales en su intento por comprender la trascendencia del pensamiento de Karl Marx, al que colocaba en un lugar destacado de la historia de las ideas. Sabedor de que sus conclusiones eran provisionales y estaban destinadas a ser rectificadas, su trabajo analítico tuvo y aún hoy tiene una gran repercusión en los debates teóricos marxistas, quizá por su capacidad para reverberar en numerosas disciplinas y, cosa más notable, en la actividad política concreta. Su deseo de conciliar la acción y el pensamiento lo llevó a considerar la filosofía como un arma de la revolución, lo mismo en el plano epistemológico que en el de la realidad social. En estas páginas se ocupa asimismo de la naturaleza de las ideologías y de cómo los aparatos del Estado las encarnan. Con rigor y claridad de exposición, Althusser polemizó a menudo como método de reflexión, poniendo en práctica lo que pregona en este volumen: "En filosofía ocurre como en política, sin crítica no hay rectificación."

Los textos incluidos en este libro se sitúan en el marco de la importante contestación interna que se desarrolla en el PCF después de la derrota de la izquierda francesa en las elecciones de marzo de 1978. Reforzar el partido a toda costa: tal parece haber sido la decisión tomada por la dirección del PCF. Todo lo demás (incluyendo la victoria de la izquierda) no ha sido tenido en cuenta. Tras ese planteamiento defensivo, Althusser encuentra y analiza dos puntos de apoyo fundamentales: un determinado tipo de organización del partido, “máquina para dominar”, construido a imagen y semejanza del aparato de Estado burgués y del aparato militar, con una dirección inamovible y una sangría permanente de militantes; y una caricatura de ideología (sobre la que se basa la unidad del partido) que, para Althusser, entró con el estalinismo en la era de las banalidades oficiales hasta alcanzar hoy el “grado cero de la teoría marxista”. This synoptic essay considers the nature and evolution of the Marxist theory that developed in Western Europe, after the defeat of the proletarian rebellions in the West and the isolation of the Russian Revolution in the East in the early 1920s. It focuses particularly on the work of Lukcs, Korsch and Gramsci; Adorno, Marcuse and Benjamin; Sartre and Althusser; and Della Volpe and Colletti, together with other figures within Western Marxism from 1920 to 1975. The theoretical production of each of these thinkers is related simultaneously to the practical fate of working-class struggles and to the cultural mutations of bourgeois thought in their time. The philosophical antecedents of the various school within this tradition - Lukcsian, Gramscian, Frankfurt, Sartrean, Althusserian and Della Volpean - are compared, and the specific innovations of their respective systems surveyed. The structural unity of 'Western Marxism', beyond the diversity of its individual thinkers, is then assessed, in a balance-sheet that contrasts its heritage with the tradition of 'classical' Marxism that preceded it, and with the commanding problems which will confront any historical materialism to succeed it.

Is popular culture merely a process of creating, marketing, and consuming a final product, or is it an expression of the artist's surroundings and an attempt to alter them? Noted Argentine/Mexican anthropologist Néstor García Canclini addresses these questions and more in Transforming Modernity, a translation of Las culturas populares en el capitalismo. Based on fieldwork among the Purépecha of Michoacán, Mexico, some of the most talented artisans of the New World, the book is not so much a work of ethnography as of philosophy—a cultural critique of modernism. García Canclini delineates three interpretations of popular culture: spontaneous creation, which posits that artistic expression is the realization of beauty and knowledge; "memory for sale," which holds that original products are created for sale in the imposed capitalist system; and the tourist outlook, whereby collectibles are created to justify development and to provide insight into what capitalism has achieved. Transforming Modernity argues strongly for popular culture as an instrument of understanding, reproducing, and transforming the social system in order to elaborate and construct class hegemony and to reflect the unequal appropriation and distribution of cultural capital.
