En septembre 1944, les fameux tirailleurs sénégalais, soldats africains de l'armée française originaires de l'ensemble des colonies françaises de l'Afrique subsaharienne, figurent parmi les libérateurs. L'hiver 1944-1945 est ainsi celui du revirement. Le soldat adulé devient un soldat honni dont on doute. Les incidents se multiplient avec, comme point d'orgue, la tragédie de Thiaroye, au Sénégal, où plusieurs dizaines de tirailleurs récemment rapatriés tombent sous les balles françaises. Mais le discrédit s'estompe face aux réalités du moment. Les tirailleurs sénégalais sont toujours les "dogues noirs de l'Empire" comme les surnomme Léopold Sédar Senghor en 1945 : insurrection du Constantinois en mai 1945, Damas, Maroc. Ils sont engagés dans la répression de l'insurrection malgache en mars 1947. Chacune de ces campagnes est alors marquée par la violence de la répression et par de nombreuses exactions. Ils représentent près de 20% du corps expéditionnaire français en Indochine en 1954. En Algérie, les Africains sont présents depuis le début du XXe siècle. Le contexte nouveau des guerres coloniales érode également l'un des autres fondements de la "Force Noire", celui de la confiance. La méfiance est alors généralisée, tous les signaux pouvant être interprétés au mieux comme une défiance, au pire comme une collusion entre colonisés. Pourtant, aucune défection collective ne vient marquer la période. Les désertions demeurent individuelles et rares. La période qui s'ouvre ainsi après 1945 est d'abord celle du retour la mission initiale, celle de la défense de l'Empire. Pourtant l'Empire n'existe plus dés 1946, laissant la place à l'Union Française puis à la Communauté. Parmi eux, certains connaitront des destins nationaux à la tête des nouveaux Etats africains : Mathieu Kerekou, Seyni Kountche, André Kolingba, Félix Maloum, etc.

Pendant la Grande Guerre, 200 000 "Sénégalais" d'AOF ont servi la France, plus de 135 000 sont venus combattre en Europe, 30 000 d'entre eux, soit un sur cinq, n'ont jamais revu les leurs... Dans le malheur de la guerre, ces sacrifiés ne le furent ni plus ni moins que leurs frères d'armes, les fantassins de la métropole. Néanmoins, leur sacrifice constitue encore aujourd'hui un élément très sensible des relations entre la France et l'Afrique. La "cristallisation" des pensions, autrement dit le gel de la dette contractée par la métropole, reste au cœur du contentieux. C'est l'histoire de cet engagement des Africains au service de la France que retrace d'abord ce livre. La participation des Africains à la Grande Guerre ne se borne pas à cet impôt du sang- Profondément secouée par une série de catastrophes, sécheresse, épidémie, disette et famine, l'Afrique occidentale française est d'abord confrontée à une crise brutale provoquée par l'entrée en guerre ; puis elle est soumise à un effort de production sans précédent en direction de la métropole. La sortie du conflit ne s'effectue pourtant pas dans le désastre et les révoltes généralisées ; Blaise Diagne, seul Noir "médiatique" à l'époque, réussit même à mener à bien un tout dernier recrutement, au-delà de toute espérance. Mais, comme le montre ce livre, une AOF nouvelle émerge où s'enracinent des germes de protestations modernes. enfin, la Grande Guerre a modifié de façon plutôt positive les regards réciproques entre Africains et Français ; mais elle a aussi ouvert la voie à un infâme réquisitoire de "la Honte Noire" ("die schwarze Schande", récupéré dans l'arsenal militaire du racisme hitlérien. C'est aussi la genèse d'un imaginaire empoisonné que veut éclairer ce livre.
