Late Antiquity, once known only as the period of protracted decline in the ancient world (Bas-Empire), has now become a major research area. In recent years, a wide-ranging historiographic debate on Late Antiquity has also begun. Replacing Gibbon’s categories of decline and decadence with those of continuity and transformation has not only brought to the fore the concept of the Late Roman period, but has made the alleged hiatus between the Roman, Byzantine and Mediaeval ages less important, while also driving to the margins the question of the end of the Roman Empire. This has broadened the scope of research on Late Antiquity enormously and made the issue of periodization of crucial significance. The resulting debate has escaped the confines of Europe and now embraces almost all historiographic cultures around the world. This book sheds new light on this debate, collecting papers given at the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences (CISH/ICHS) in Jinan, China. They recall key moments of the discovery of the world of Late Antiquity, and show how it is possible to reach a definition of an age, analysing different sectors of history, using disparate sources, and with the guidance of very varied interpretative models.

Confirming his moniker as “America’s philosopher of democracy,” John Dewey engaged in a series of public debates over the course of his lifetime, vividly demonstrating how his thought translates into action. These debates made Dewey a household name and a renowned public intellectual during the early to mid-twentieth century, a time when the United States fought two World Wars, struggled through an economic depression, experienced explosive economic growth and spawned a grassroots movement that characterized an entire era: Progressivism. Unfortunately, much recent Dewey scholarship neglects to situate Dewey’s ideas in the broader context of his activities and engagements as a public intellectual. This project charts a path through two of Dewey’s actual debates with his contemporaries, Leon Trotsky and Robert Hutchins, to two reconstructed debates with contemporary intellectuals, E.D. Hirsch and Robert Talisse, both of whom criticized Dewey’s ideas long after the American philosopher’s death and, finally, to two recent debates, one on home schooling and the other on U.S. foreign policy, in which Dewey’s ideas offer a unique and compelling vision of a way forward.

En nuestro mundo global de comienzos del siglo XXI, es conveniente acudir al pasado para discernir si los problemas del presente son tan nuevos como se piensa y si las propuestas de cambio ofrecidas son tan originales. Cuando los historiadores leemos los textos de comienzos del siglo XIX y los comparamos con la prensa actual, a veces nos surgen dudas acerca de qué es lo antiguo y qué lo nuevo. En aquella época se discutió a fondo y con rigor qué tipo de estructura fiscal se precisaba para sostener Estados fuertes, qué tipo de sociedades había que crear para alcanzar la modernidad liberal y qué relaciones internacionales se debían impulsar en el contexto de los nuevos Estados-nación emergentes. Se partía de la convicción de que las nuevas sociedades en formación eran piezas integrantes del rompecabezas formado por el complejo mundo occidental atlántico. Se compartían unos principios liberales políticos básicos y había un acuerdo sobre las metas de la modernidad a las que se aspiraba. A comienzos del siglo xxi, los enfoques posmodernos y poscoloniales han demostrado el esquematismo de algunos de aquellos planteamientos, pero también la validez actual de otros. Al estilo de los viajeros románticos de antaño, deberíamos dejarnos asombrar por las diferencias del otro para descubrir qué hay de propio y de ajeno, de nuevo y de viejo, en un nosotros que es y ha sido siempre plural. El presente volumen reúne una selección de trabajos realizados por los miembros que conforman el equipo de investigación del proyecto «El pensamiento liberal atlántico, 1770-1880. Fiscalidad, recursos naturales, integración social y política exterior desde una perspectiva comparada» (Ref. HAR2010-18363, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación de España). Todos los capítulos reflexionan, desde diferentes perspectivas, sobre lo viejo y lo nuevo del proyecto liberal atlántico.

Desde el funcionamiento de la caja de Buenos Aires en el siglo XVII hasta el análisis de cómo en el México del siglo XX se experimentó la centra¬lización de los ingresos tributarios frente a la incapacidad de las entidades federadas para colectarlos de manera eficiente. Otros trabajos de este libro analizan tanto las vicisitudes que experimentaron las economías brasileña y mexicana en la transición de colonia a nación, así como los éxitos y contratiempos de las economías mexicana y ecuatoriana en el siglo XX. Tanto en su conjunto como en trabajos específicos, el volumen aborda la problemática de la transición. A la luz de los ensayos aquí presentados, este concepto se entiende como el paso de un Estado ocupado en colectar impuestos indirectos y distribuirlo en gastos de guerra y deuda a otro que ya expandió su abanico de ingresos y se hace cargo de fomentar la economía y cuidar el bienestar de su población. En el estudio de esta transición, el tema obligado en la mayoría de los trabajos es el del federalismo. En estas páginas se exploran casos particulares de Brasil y México. La conclusión es que el federalismo no contiene una definición a priori, sino que debe explicarse y com¬prenderse a la luz del momento histórico y situación geográfica de cada nación.
