Uno dei più importanti storici italiani esplora il rapporto che ha legato la folla a leader carismatici come Roosevelt, Mussolini, Lenin, Hitler, Ataturk, de Gaulle, Kennedy. E rivela le dinamiche all’interno delle masse, la seduzione delle parole e delle immagini, la personalizzazione della politica, gli effetti sulla democrazia. Attraverso la sua indagine, le persone che vogliono preservare l’autonomia della loro individualità in una democrazia recitativa possono forse apprendere come evitare di diventare una folla, che non può fare a meno di un padrone. La caratteristica fondamentale della folla, protagonista della politica moderna, è il bisogno di un capo. Da ciò ha origine, nell’epoca contemporanea, la personalizzazione della politica e del potere anche nelle democrazie moderne. Nel 2009 “Le Monde” inserì fra i venti libri che hanno cambiato il mondo La psicologia delle folle di Gustave Le Bon, pubblicato nel 1895, tradotto in molte lingue e continuamente riedito fino ai giorni nostri. Le Bon insegnava ai capi che «conoscere l’arte di impressionare l’immaginazione delle folle, vuol dire conoscere l’arte di governare». Politici molto diversi, democratici, totalitari o autoritari seguirono gli insegnamenti della Psicologia delle folle. Nella scia dell’opera di Le Bon, Emilio Gentile rievoca le principali esperienze di personalizzazione del potere nell’epoca contemporanea, da Napoleone a Kennedy: una riflessione storica utile per comprendere l’attuale tendenza a trasformare il ‘governo del popolo, dal popolo, per il popolo’, in una democrazia recitativa, fondata sul comando di un capo acclamato dalla folla. «I caratteri specifici della folla sono la suggestionabilità, l’incapacità di ragionare, l’esagerazione dei sentimenti, il semplicismo delle opinioni e altre caratteristiche che apparentano la folla al bambino o agli esseri primitivi per “la facilità a lasciarsi impressionare dalle parole e dalle immagini, a farsi trascinare in atti lesivi dei suoi più evidenti interessi”.» «Nella folla, le attitudini coscienti, razionali e intellettuali dei singoli individui si annullano, e predominano i caratteri inconsci. I fenomeni inconsci svolgono una parte preponderante nel funzionamento dell’intelligenza. E ciò accade non solo per una folla composta da individui senza cultura o appartenenti alle classi popolari, ma anche per una folla composta da individui colti o appartenenti alle classi superiori. Le decisioni di interesse generale prese da un’assemblea di uomini illustri, ma di specializzazioni diverse, non sono molto migliori delle decisioni che potrebbero esser prese in una riunione di imbecilli.» «Nella psicologia delle folle, le immagini acquistano la vivacità delle cose reali e sono considerate reali: l’irreale predomina sul reale. Ciò va tenuto presente soprattutto nelle elezioni. Il capo candidato può promettere senza timore le più imponenti riforme. Le promesse esagerate producono sul momento un grande effetto e non impegnano affatto per l’avvenire, perché l’elettore non si preoccupa mai di sapere se l’eletto ha rispettato la proclamata professione di fede, in base alla quale avrebbe dovuto giustificare la sua elezione. Ma soprattutto il capo deve possedere il prestigio, l’elemento fondamentale della persuasione, la molla più forte di ogni potere.»
