This edited collection presents an economic history of Catalonia and its economic crises, from Roman times to the political difficulties of the present day. It considers how the strong identity of the Catalan people has been reinforced in critical episodes such as the commercial revolution of the Late Medieval Age, the 1640 rebellion, the Succession War of 1705-1714, the industrial revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the strong repression during early Francoism. The book also explores how historical parallels from Catalonia’s past might shed light on the long-term consequences of the Great Recession of 2007-9 and recovery in the EU, showing how the typical Mediterranean approach of adjusting to crises by depreciating currencies and expanding public deficits has been less straightforward during the most recent financial crisis. Barcelona pot considerar-se un prototipus de ciutat mediterrània europea amb una llarga tradició urbanística. Com a tal, ha seguit un procés específic de formació històrica, caracteritzat per la densitat i la compacitat de la forma urbana, l'evolució per extensió més que per reforma, etc. Qualsevol història urbanística inclou necessàriament un resum de l'experiència territorial i urbana, i fa una atenció especial a les dimensions físiques de la ciutat que en condicionen el desenvolupament cultural i econòmic. Aquest llibre se centra en la construcció de Barcelona, prenent com a base les operacions de planificació i els projectes urbanístics més importants, i nodrint-se de diverses fonts per a les seves diferents fases. El seu desenvolupament urbanístic ha estat molt variat, fins i tot prescindint de les intervencions reials o d'aristòcrates que hi han produït grans avingudes i parcs. L'escala local de molts dels projectes contrasta amb les aspiracions cosmopolites que han convertit algunes d'aquestes intervencions en tan innovadores. Entre elles destaquen els grans projectes que s'han realitzat en ocasió d'esdeveniments molt especials, com l'Exposició Universal de 1888, l'Exposició Internacional d'Indústries Elèctriques de 1929 i els Jocs Olímpics de 1992. Avui, al segle XXI, s'obren noves perspectives gràcies al nou marc institucional europeu i, particularment, a canvis en el sistema econòmic ara que entrem en una fase postindustrial, en què els mitjans tenen una importància creixent. És difícil determinar-ne les repercussions espacials, però la història de l'urbanisme a Barcelona mostra que ja ha superat les grans contradiccions als darrers segles.

El Banc de Barcelona, pioner de la banca a Espanya, va ser la principal entitat de crèdit de Catalunya durant tota la seva existència. Desposseït del privilegi d’emissió el 1874, continuà actuant com a banc comercial, però no va saber adaptar-se al nou paper, de manera que a poc a poc s’allunyà de les necessitats financeres del país. Un darrer intent de revifar-lo mitjançant l’absorció d’altres entitats i l’entrada en el remolí especulatiu de la Primera Guerra Mundial l’abocaren a la fallida. Aquesta obra, que abraça des de la pèrdua del seu privilegi d’emissió fins a la suspensió de pagaments i el tancament definitiu el desembre de 1920, constitueix la segona part d’El Banc de Barcelona, 1844-1874. Història d’un banc d’emissió (2009), dels mateixos autors. S’hi analitzen les causes de la decadència del Banc i s’ofereixen noves dades sobre les circumstàncies que el van dur a la fallida, que ha estat interpretada com una evidència del fracàs financer de la burgesia catalana.

La aparición y difusión del automóvil modificó sustancialmente las pautas de movilidad, la escala de los mercados, los criterios de ubicación del tejido productivo, las relaciones entre productores y consumidores y, en fin, la distribución de la población en el territorio y los hábitats, desde el mundo rural al urbano, e indudablemente los hábitos de viaje y la industria del turismo. El automóvil fue un factor de civilización que favoreció el desarrollo del turismo en el primer tercio del siglo XX tanto en las posibilidades de viajar y alcanzar nuevos territorios como en la ampliación de las geografías turísticas.
