Ocho notas llevaba por título el primer libro de ensayos que publicó Francisco Segovia, en 1985. Ahora, casi 40 años después, aparecen estos 18 ensayos, en cuyo mero título vemos las correspondencias y las diferencias con aquél. El primero contenía "notas" y era un libro de formato pequeño y sólo 90 páginas; el segundo, en cambio, contiene verdaderos "ensayos" y casi triplica en tamaño al anterior. Sin embargo, ambos comparten un mismo espíritu crítico y un núcleo de intereses: la literatura, la poesía, el arte, la aparición del mundo moderno y ... ¿su desaparición? 18 ensayos reúne algunos prólogos –muy a menudo corregidos o ampliados– y algunas conferencias inéditas. Pero no lo hace completamente al azar, pues varios de sus temas se siguen en una continuidad de autores que va de Shakespeare a Seamus Heaney, pasando por Tolstoi, Marina Tsvietáieva, Yorgos Seferis, Luis Cernuda... Sus páginas centrales se demoran en las vanguardias del siglo XX, representadas aquí no sólo por sus actores europeos (Marinetti, Malévich, Breton) sino también por sus correspondientes mexicanos e hispanoamericanos (Cuesta, Paz, Westphalen).
