La bureautique, les contenus web, les mails ou les wikis ont-ils vocation à être d'éternels électrons libres ? Les organisations prennent conscience d'un besoin de cohérence et de valorisation de leurs multiples contenus. Réponse à cette problématique, l'enterprise content management (ECM) est une démarche globale de gestion des contenus de l'entreprise. Elle concerne principalement ceux, nombreux, qui ne sont pas pris en charge par des applications informatiques traditionnelles. Ces contenus sont autant des documents que des fragments brefs, rédigés pour formaliser un savoir-faire, communiquer, donner un avis, commenter. Ils se développent via des sites web ou des environnements collaboratifs. La démarche ECM vise à donner du sens à ces contenus en les associant à des processus de l'entreprise. Il s'agit de décloisonner les contenus pour les valoriser. Dans sa préoccupation d'être guidée par l'usage, l'ECM est sensible à la dimension marketing. L'ECM systématise la gestion documentaire en traitant les contenus de A à Z et réalise une convergence entre la gestion de documents, la gestion de contenu et l'esprit « web 2.0 ». Il s'agit bien maintenant de concevoir une architecture des contenus au sein de chaque organisation. L'ECM vise à mutualiser les moyens techniques en recherchant une plateforme unique et intégrée (GED, CMS, collaboratif, workflow, portail, recherche). Cet effort d'intégration entre ces outils permet de rendre transparente la solution technique pour se consacrer à l'usage. De fait, c'est une démarche de convergence organisationnelle et technique de la gestion de l'information et de la gestion des systèmes d'information.
