John Rawls (1921-2002) è stato il più influente filosofo politico del nostro tempo. È stato uno dei pochi intellettuali contemporanei la cui opera, come quella di Freud e Darwin, è stata conosciuta al di là del suo campo scientifico, fino a far parte della cultura generale. Questo è il primo testo introduttivo sistematico all'opera del filosofo statunitense, con particolare attenzione ai suoi tre testi principali: Una teoria della giustizia, Liberalismo politico e Il diritto dei popoli. Sebastiano Maffettone conduce la sua analisi con tre ipotesi esegetiche: interpretativa, metodologica e teoretica. La prima investe il dibattito accademico su continuità-discontinuità riguardo ai due periodi in cui è generalmente divisa l'opera di Rawls (1940-1980 e 1980-2002). L'ipotesi metodologica propone un filo rosso attraverso cui si può leggere in maniera unitaria tutta l'opera dello studioso statunitense: è la celebre teoria della ‘priorità del giusto' secondo cui il giusto (right) precede il buono (good) nel senso che in tutte le deliberazioni pratiche che riguardano la giustizia, i desideri e le preferenze, che definiscono ciò che è buono per le persone, devono essere subordinati alle richieste del giusto. Infine il livello teoretico affronta le teorie critiche sull'opera del filosofo.
