Estratto dal numero XXII della rivista «Archeologia dell’Architettura». La qualità del materiale impiegato nella costruzione della casaforte “Gran Masun”, nel comune di Carema (TO), e la cura nella messa in opera parlano di maestranze esperte e profonde conoscitrici di ciò che il territorio poteva offrire nell’ambito dei criteri di approvvigionamento di un cantiere edile. Lo studio dell’edificio attraverso l’analisi stratigrafica muraria, le datazioni dendrocronologiche e l’articolazione degli spazi interni, ha permesso di ricostruirne la storia e di collocare la sua qualità architettonica in un più vasto ambito territoriale. All’interno di un progetto di restauro ancora in corso, si sono individuati numerosi elementi strutturali lignei che permettono di ricostituire e proporre una nuova immagine di quello che oggi ha le sembianze di un semplice blocco parallelepipedo. Le datazioni dendrocronologiche (1404/1405) dimostrano come la “Gran Masun” appartenga a quel momento di storia del popolamento rurale in cui la costruzione di abitazioni in prossimità di redditizie aree agricole, e nel caso in questione si deve pensare già alla coltivazione della vite, prende slancio con una crescita massiccia. Un corpo architettonico che si configurava quale riferimento visivo e topografico all’interno del paesaggio rurale, divenendo partecipe della formazione della mappa mentale di quel territorio. Una struttura che assimilava in se esigenze di sicurezza e di funzionalità pur non venendo meno nel mostrarsi quale strumento di ostentazione e di prestigio.

Il volume contiene gli atti del seminario, organizzato a Padova il 28 ottobre2016, sulla quantificazione in architettura, sulla base di tre parametri: metri cubi, tempi e costi di costruzione. Il metodo, già applicato ad edifici di età romana,soprattutto pubblici, è stato ora messo a punto anche per edifici medievali, soprattutto chiese e fortificazioni. Nell’incontro padovano ne sono stati discussii principali problemi relativamente a computo metrico estimativo, sviluppo reale del cantiere, edilizia pluristratificata. Quando presenti, si sono poi confrontatele fonti scritte con i resti materiali conservati. Sovente approssimative quando sono letterarie e tendono a celebrare il committente, sono più vicine alla realtàse consistono in registri di cantiere e note di spesa che ci permettono di stabilire con un certo dettaglio i ritmi del cantiere in rapporto alle maestranze e aimateriali impiegati. Nel complesso la quantificazione in edilizia rappresenta un contributo importante, ma da mettere in relazione con molteplici altri aspetti, per una ricostruzione socioeconomica delle società del passato.

Questo lavoro riassume e presenta i risultati di tre anni di ricerche condotte nei territori dell’Appenino tosco-emiliano, con particolare attenzione per le zone comprese entro i limiti della provincia di Reggio Emilia. L’oggetto principale dell’indagine sono le architetture domestiche medievali, tanto quelle ancora conservate in elevato quanto quelle emerse nel corso delle campagne di scavo archeologico, da quelle più risalenti nel tempo fino alla svolta tardomedievale. L’attenzione è stata rivolta non solo a uno studio tipologico dei modelli architettonici e alla loro evoluzione, ma anche alla comprensione del potenziale bacino di informazioni che questo particolare tipo di fonte rappresenta per la storia sociale, economica, insediativa e culturale del territorio. Si tratta in sostanza di uno studio di archeologia dell’architettura che non intende limitarsi ai temi classici, bensì si propone come punto di incontro tra l’analisi degli alzati e l’archeologia del paesaggio. Attraverso lo studio intrecciato tra testimonianze archeologiche e fonti scritte si sono messe in luce alcune peculiarità insediative proprie dell’Appennino reggiano, derivanti dagli eventi che hanno plasmato le comunità umane che lo hanno abitato nel corso dei secoli medievali. L’estensione dei metodi propri dell’archeologia degli alzati, già abbondantemente impiegati nello studio di chiese e castelli, alle strutture cosiddette “minori” del paesaggio architettonico ha consentito di comprendere con maggiore chiarezza le relazioni e le strutture sociali che si vennero a determinare, di volta in volta, a fronte dei mutamenti degli assetti politici del territorio.
