Ma se molti ne hanno analizzato la portata etica e politica – e altrettanti, in modi diversi, hanno cercato di contestarla o ridimensionarla – pochissimi hanno avuto il coraggio di fare un passo indietro rispetto alle ideologie, e ripartire da una rigorosa cronistoria dei fatti. Passando per l’armistizio dell’8 settembre, la creazione della r.s.i., lo sbarco alleato ad Anzio, il proclama Alexander, che inaugura l’ultimo, durissimo, inverno di guerra, e le insurrezioni dell’aprile 1945. Nella Storia di Oliva troviamo l’epopea partigiana e la sua quotidianità; il frastagliato fronte antifascista e l’Italia spaccata in due tra Nord e Sud; la resistenza silenziosa degli internati militari nei lager; il ruolo determinante degli Alleati. Ma non solo. Perché riaffermare il valore fondativo della Resistenza significa anche raccontare ciò che accade nei giorni conclusivi della guerra, nella drammatica resa dei conti finale: i cadaveri illustri di piazzale Loreto, gli improvvisati tribunali del popolo e le esecuzioni del maggio-giugno 1945 vengono inseriti nel contesto che li ha determinati e spiegati alla luce di una stagione in cui guerra di liberazione e guerra di classe si sono mescolate a forti componenti di guerra civile. Previously unpublished, the diary is a significant source for all students of the Second World War and the history of European and British fascism. The diary covers the period from the fall of Mussolini in 1943 to the end of the war in 1945, two years in which British fascist Major James Strachey Barnes lived in Italy as a 'traitor'.
