Vincendo la guerra civile Franco impose alla Spagna una dittatura di tipo fascista. Per molti anni dopo la fine della guerra egli ha continuato, con grande spietatezza, a uccidere e tenere in prigionia un enorme numero di oppositori. Poiché per tutto questo il regime franchista è restato il simbolo della più oscura e longeva antidemocrazia nella storia dell'Europa occidentale, la Repubblica che egli ha abbattuto è rimasta il simbolo della democrazia. È noto però che la Spagna repubblicana all'avvio della guerra fu immediatamente travolta da un'ondata rivoluzionaria, e solitamente si considera questo stravolgimento della sua natura una conseguenza del golpe militare, per far fronte al quale era occorso armare il popolo. Ma è veramente così? I generali golpisti vollero affossare la Repubblica per la loro ostilità verso le riforme che essa stava attuando nell'ordine e nel rispetto delle norme di una democrazia liberale? Oppure essi poterono contare sull'attivo sostegno, o quanto meno sulla sconcertata passività, di un'ampia parte della cittadinanza, perché diversi eventi e segnali diffusero la paura che il paese stesse già imboccando la via di un'irreversibile rivoluzione?
