El objeto de la investigación, es concretar cuáles han sido los factores fundamentales que han hecho que la infografía, como proceso comunicacional, se haya integrado en la prensa diaria; de tal modo que, en sus páginas, se ha asentado un nuevo modo de presentar las noticias, en el que las representaciones gráficas son la base de sus mensajes. La aplicación de la informática a la representación gráfica del tratamiento de la imagen ha abierto un cúmulo infinito de posibilidades a la creatividad de los medios de comunicación y ha acuñado un nuevo concepto, "infografía", que rápidamente se ha independizado de sus raíces. Neologismo que, cuando se utiliza en el marco general de la "infografía periodística", debe ampliar su significado en una doble vertiente: 1) desde el punto de vista del proceso de elaboración de productos informativos predominantemente gráficos; 2) desde la definición conceptual de esos productos, de tal manera que cuando se usa el término "infograma" o "infográfico", con significado de información que incluye componente textual y gráfico, se trata de una nueva forma de presentar una noticia. En este contexto la infografía acapara lo imaginario, produce lo real y sus simulaciones engendran apoyos para informaciones textuales. El análisis referido puntualmente a los conflictos bélicos hace especial énfasis en la información de la guerra del Golfo Pérsico. La situación de la infografía en la prensa diaria, en los diarios de tirada nacional y modelos relevantes de prensa internacional premiada por sus aplicaciones infográficas por la SND. La capacidad técnica brinda los medios para reconstruir el acontecimiento y orientar sus significaciones allí donde, a veces, no llega una cámara o el ojo del periodista. La Guerra del Golfo es una buena muestra de ello: fue anunciada y anticipada gracias a la producción de reportajes fundados en hipótesis y basados en simulaciones; y tuvo que ser explicada, durante los períodos de los combates, recurriendo a las técnicas de la infografía, ya que el control de la información por el dispositivo militar omitió la realidad de aquellos.
