En coincidencia con el proceso de desestalinización implementado en la Unión Soviética a partir del XX Congreso del PCUS y los levantamientos de Praga y Budapest, la izquierda occidental desarrolló una serie de visiones del marxismo alternativas a la tradicionalmente procedente del bloque del Este. Los intelectuales de izquierda trataron de reinterpretar el marxismo adaptándolo a la realidad política del momento, en el que la pujanza de los procesos revolucionarios anticoloniales de Asia y África, así como la prolífica experiencia de la guerrilla latinoamericana, abrieron un vasto campo para la experimentación de variantes tácticas e ideológicas dentro del campo del marxismo que, hasta entonces, parecían constreñidas exclusivamente al sovietismo. El modelo revolucionario insurreccional no tardó en aplicarse en Europa en forma de guerrilla urbana, iniciándose una eclosión de organizaciones que a imitación de la insurgencia asiática, africana o latinoamericana trataron de desestabilizar al sistema capitalista mediante el uso de la violencia armada. Se dio inició, así, a una de las grandes etapas del terrorismo europeo, que principalmente entre los últimos años 50 y finales de los 80 acaparó portadas, llegando a poner en serios aprietos a distintos gobiernos occidentales. Esta obra trata de comprender la génesis y el desarrollo del terrorismo europeo de izquierda de la segunda mitad del siglo XX bajo una doble vertiente: Entendiéndolo como resultado de un movimiento intelectual de adecuación de las lógicas y estrategias antiimperialistas así como desde una perspectiva política, poniendo el énfasis en la evolución de los procesos internos de cada una de las formaciones. Desfilarán los nombres de las grandes organizaciones terroristas como la Fracción del Ejército Rojo (RAF), las Brigadas Rojas (BR), el Ejército Republicano Irlandés (IRA) o Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), sin olvidar otras que, por duración o intensidad, podrían catalogarse de menor entidad pero de gran peso como los Grupos Revolucionarios Primero de Octubre (GRAPO) o el Frente de Liberación Nacional de Córcega (FLNC).

This book explores the history and legacy of monuments to the fallen from the Francoist side in the Spanish Civil War. Del Arco Blanco studies thousands of monuments in towns and cities across Spain to provide a detailed account of the history and memory of the civil war, Francoism, and the transition to democracy. Chapters in the book focus on the myth of those said to have 'fallen for God and for Spain'—a phrase that encapsulated and shaped the dichotomy between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ Spaniards. They also focus on the use of monuments to control political and ideological ideals and to legitimise the Francoist dictatorship. Further chapters study Spanish society’s struggle to deal with its past of mass killing, denial, and exclusion. Del Arco Blanco also pays attention to the way the Francoist authorities used monuments and memory for their political and ideological advantage and to control people, power as well as the political agenda. The book draws on extensive research to reconstruct both the specific history of monuments scattered throughout the country and their role within manipulative Francoist memory of the Spanish Civil War. El segundo momento corresponde al nacimiento de la escritura y comienza hacia finales del siglo XVIII cuando, a través de sus propias huellas, los Negros, estos seres-cooptados-por-otros, comienzan a articular un lenguaje propio y son capaces de reivindicarse como sujetos plenos en el mundo viviente. Marcado por innumerables revueltas de esclavos y la independencia de Haití en 1804, los combates por la abolición de la trata, las descolonizaciones africanas y las luchas por los derechos civiles en los Estados Unidos, este período se completa con el desmantelamiento del apartheid durante los años finales del siglo XX.
