I bombardamenti aerei con materiali come il napalm avevano conseguenze brutali, che rendevano la popolazione fortemente ostile agli americani. I guerriglieri del Vietcong si nascondevano e si mischiavano nei villaggi del Sud. Per impedire ciò, gli americani deportarono i contadini del Sud in villaggi strategici, circondati da filo spinato e controllati dagli americani. Con l’operazione Rolling Thunder (1965-1968) gli americani tentarono di bombardare bersagli strategici in tutto il Vietnam del Nord, ma ad essere colpiti dalle bombe furono soprattutto gli ospedali e le scuole. Molti scrittori considerano la guerra del Vietnam una tragedia degli Stati Uniti, non Hastings, che intende questo libro come una lezione per il ventunesimo secolo sull’abuso della forza militare per affrontare sfide politiche e culturali irrisolvibili.
