Among the adventures of Odysseus, his encounter with the mysterious goddess Circe, who transforms the hero's companions into swine, has long been a favorite of readers. The combination of magic, metamorphosis, intrigue, seduction, and danger in this episode of the Odyssey make it particularly attractive and thought-provoking, so that many later authors mention or recreate it: Apollonius of Rhodes, Plutarch, Virgil, Ovid, Dante, Lope, Calderon, etc. This book analyzes the tradition of the Homeric myth in western literature, from ancient Greece to the present day, with particular attention to Spanish literature. From archaic Greece through Roman literature, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the Spanish Baroque, the Homeric theme of Circe is imitated and transformed again and again, with the characters and narrative elements adapted to various new contexts. A comparative analysis of these elaborations of the theme of Circe allows us to appreciate a long and rich literary tradition that fuses myth, philosophy, and poetry.

Louis A. Perez Jr.'s new history of nineteenth-century Cuba chronicles in fascinating detail the emergence of an urban middle class that was imbued with new knowledge and moral systems. Fostering innovative skills and technologies, these Cubans became deeply implicated in an expanding market culture during the boom in sugar production and prior to independence. Contributing to the cultural history of capitalism in Latin America, Perez argues that such creoles were cosmopolitans with powerful transnational affinities and an abiding identification with modernity. This period of Cuban history is usually viewed through a political lens, but Perez, here emphasizing the character of everyday life within the increasingly fraught colonial system, shows how moral, social, and cultural change that resulted from market forces also contributed to conditions leading to the collapse of the Spanish colonial administration. Perez highlights women's centrality in this process, showing how criollas adapted to new modes of self-representation as a means of self-fulfillment. Increasing opportunities for middle-class women's public presence and social participation was both cause and consequence of expanding consumerism and of women's challenges to prevailing gender hierarchies. Seemingly simple actions--riding a bicycle, for example, or deploying the abanico, the fan, in different ways--exposed how traditional systems of power and privilege clashed with norms of modernity and progress.

Rafael Altamira y Crevea (Alicante, 1866-México, 1951) fue una personalidad compleja y múltiple, sin igual en la cultura española que se desarrolla entre el último tercio del siglo xix y la primera mitad del XX: catedrático de leyes, historiador y, en su juventud, crítico literario. Entre su actividad crítica sobresale La literatura y el realismo contemporáneo que salió a la luz, a lo largo de 1886, en La Ilustración Ibérica, una de las más prestigiosas revistas del momento. En rigor este estudio –elegante, erudito y combativo– era un libro que Altamira desechó reeditar más tarde, pues lo juzgaba hijo de unos valores estéticos que el modernismo cuestionaría en parte. La literatura y el realismo contemporáneo es, por tanto, un estudio no inédito pero sí de difícil acceso para los estudiosos de las letras decimonónicas, algunos de cuyos protagonistas –tan visibles en sus páginas– eran Dickens, Hawthorne, Flaubert, Zola, Daudet, Galdós o Clarín. Why does Argentina’s national anthem describe its citizens as sons of the Inca? Why did patriots in nineteenth-century Chile name a battleship after the Aztec emperor Montezuma? Answers to both questions lie in the tangled knot of ideas that constituted the creole imagination in nineteenth-century Spanish America. Rebecca Earle examines the place of preconquest peoples such as the Aztecs and the Incas within the sense of identity—both personal and national—expressed by Spanish American elites in the first century after independence, a time of intense focus on nation-building. Starting with the anti-Spanish wars of independence in the early nineteenth century, Earle charts the changing importance elite nationalists ascribed to the pre-Columbian past through an analysis of a wide range of sources, including historical writings, poems and novels, postage stamps, constitutions, and public sculpture. This eclectic archive illuminates the nationalist vision of creole elites throughout Spanish America, who in different ways sought to construct meaningful national myths and histories. Traces of these efforts are scattered across nineteenth-century culture; Earle maps the significance of those traces. She also underlines the similarities in the development of nineteenth-century elite nationalism across Spanish America. By offering a comparative study focused on Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador, The Return of the Native illustrates both the common features of elite nation-building and some of the significant variations. The book ends with a consideration of the pro-indigenous indigenista movements that developed in various parts of Spanish America in the early twentieth century.
