This book offers the first systematic analysis of the cultural and religious appropriation of Andalusian architecture by Spanish historians during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. To date this process of Christian appropriation has generally been discussed as a phenomenon of architectural hybridisation. However, this was a period in which the construction of a Spanish national identity became a key focus of historical discourse. As a result, cultural hybridity encountered partial opposition from those seeking to establish cultural and religious homogeneity. Spain's Islamic past became a major concern in this period and historical writing served as the site for a complex negotiation of identity. Historians and antiquarians used a range of strategies to re-appropriate the meaning of medieval Islamic heritage as befitted the new identity of Spain as a Catholic monarchy and empire. On the one hand, the monuments' Islamic origin was subjected to historical revisions and re-identified as Roman or Phoenician. On the other hand, religious forgeries were invented that staked claims for buildings and cities having been founded by Christians prior to the arrival of the Muslims in Spain. Islamic stones were used as core evidence in debates that shaped the early development of archaeology, and they also became the centre of a historical controversy about the origin of Spain as a nation as well as its ecclesiastical history.

Taking up the invitation extended by tentative attempts over the past three decades to construct a functioning definition of the genre, Jonathan Bradbury traces the development of the vernacular miscellany in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain and Spanish-America. In the first full-length study of this commercially successful and intellectually significant genre, Bradbury underlines the service performed by the miscellanists as disseminators of knowledge and information to a popular readership. His comprehensive analysis of the miscelánea corrects long-standing misconceptions, starting from its poorly-understood terminology, and erects divisions between it and other related genres. His work illuminates the relationship between the Golden Age Spanish miscellany and those of the classical world and humanist milieu, and illustrates how the vernacular tradition moved away from these forebears. Bradbury examines in particular the later inclusion of explicitly fictional components, such as poetic compositions and short prose fiction, alongside the vulgarisation of erudite or inaccessible prose material, which was the primary function of the earlier Spanish miscellanies. He tackles the flexibility of the miscelánea as a genre by assessing the conceptual, thematic and formal aspects of such works, and exploring the interaction of these features. As a result, a genre model emerges, through which Golden Age works with fragmentary and non-continuous contents can better be interpreted and classified.

El jesuïta reusenc Pere Gil i Estalella (1550-1622) fou una personalitat rellevant del seu temps: lul·lista, assessor de bisbes i institucions, confessor de virreis, defensor de les bruixes, qualificador del Sant Ofici, procurador dels processos de canonització de sant Ignasi a Barcelona, Manresa i Montserrat, tres vegades rector del col·legi de Betlem de Barcelona, rector del col·legi de Monti-sion a Palma i provincial d’Aragó de la Companyia de Jesús. Entre les seves obres destaquen la publicació d’un art de ben morir i la traducció al català del Contem[p]tus mundi. Aquest llibre ofereix l’edició del manuscrit 112 de la Biblioteca Pública Episcopal de Barcelona (BPEB), que conté la Història moral de Cathalunya de Pere Gil, el primer projecte reeixit d’història de Catalunya a l’època moderna, llibre segon d’un projecte més ampli, la Història cathalana, que inclou també una geografia del Principat, llibre primer, inèdit fins al 1949, quan Josep Iglésies l’edità; una Història ecclesiàstica de Cathalunya, llibre tercer, avui perdut, i unes Vidas dels sants de Cathalunya, llibre quart. L’edició va acompanyada d’un estudi introductori que inclou la biografia de l’autor i d’una segona part que s’ocupa de la contextualització de l’obra dins la historiografia catalana de l’època moderna en què es palesa l’ambició i l’originalitat de la Història moral de Cathalunya.
