This edited volume explores the ways in which Miguel de Cervantes adopted humanist positions, whether he submitted these to critical examination or made them the target of his satires. It tries to determine how familiar Cervantes was with the contemporary developments of humanism in different European countries, and if references to particular humanist thinkers can be identified in his work. The contributions gathered in this volume, all from acknowledged Cervantes experts, tackle among others the following questions: How does Cervantes analyse the humanist connexion between science and virtue? Does Don Quixote’s conflictive reenaction of chivalric novels come from the humanist ideal of 'imitatio'? Do the many dialogues in Cervantes’ work originate in the rhetorical tradition? El presente estudio tiene una doble finalidad. La primera consiste en demostrar que El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, la obra suprema de la literatura universal, llena de sabiduría y de erudición clásicas, no pudo ser escrita por el «ingenio lego» Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, tanto por la escasez de sus estudios como por la ajetreada vida que llevó, muy alejada de las características favorecedoras de la creación literaria. La segunda finalidad consiste en la demostración de la autoría de Juan Luis Vives, nuestro primer y más universal humanista, mediante la metodología comparativa de los textos quijotescos con las obras latinas del valenciano. En la comparación se aportan centenares de argumentos, más que suficientes para tener la seguridad de dicha autoría, la seguridad exigida en las ciencias humanísticas, como son la filología y la historia. Se aplica la misma metodología al muy debatido problema del descubrimiento del autor que se escondía bajo el supuesto nombre de Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda.

Este libro trata sobre el humanismo español y las soluciones tecnológicas que desarrolla para resolver algunos de los problemas informativos y, por lo tanto, culturales que se derivan del descubrimiento de América. América será, pues, sinónimo de complejidad para el humanismo.
