El objeto de esta tesis es analizar la educación no formal o informal (aquella que discurre fuera de todo marco institucional o contexto escolar9 proyectada por la Iglesia gaditana en el último tercio del siglo XVIII y primer tercio del siglo XIX, teniendo en cuenta el marco comparativo dentro del contexto general de resto de las diócesis de Andalucía. Este objeto se justifica por la naturaleza misma del hecho educativo, que trasciende con creces el ámbito escolar para ser la sociedad en su conjunto una posibilidad de educación irrenunciable. La Iglesia jerárquica católica, emblemático e influyente referente cultural, social, económico y político que ejerciera el monopolio de la educación en la época en cuestión, desarrollará esta función educativa no formal a través de su discurso religioso, de su oratoria sagrada, que emergerá desde el púlpito mediante la predicación. Al margen del contenido religioso de estos discursos, su capacidad de modulación del pensamiento y por tanto de incidir en las conciencias y, en definitiva, en el comportamiento individual y colectivo del ser humano resulta innegable. A través de ello se intentará influir en la mentalidad de la sociedad, generando actitudes (que no siempre serán de reapropiación sino también de desvío, desconfianza o resistencia) y modificando conductas mediante los valores morales transmitidos. Discursos religiosos que se sustentaran físicamente en la literatura clerical, en lo que pudiéramos llamar pulicística eclesiástica (compendio de escritos pastorales, publicados con licencia eclesiástica, de procedencia episcopal generalmente: edictos, cartas, exhortaciones, breves, homilías, sermones, oraciones fúnebres, ..con la intención de requerir obligaciones, dar consejos o formar estados de opinión).
