¿Cuáles son las razones por las que los presidentes argentinos y chilenos creen importante seguir afrontando el pasado político de sus países? ¿Por qué ningún mandatario se ha resistido a la tentación de injerir en el tema de las políticas públicas de la memoria a través de distintas estrategias con costos políticos variables? Este libro se basa en el argumento central de que, a pesar de las particularidades de cada país, los presidentes siguen estimando a la memoria como un problema que merece la atención gubernamental, a través de instrumentos oficiales como son las políticas públicas. Pero, en ese proceso, también es cierto que no todos los mandatarios comparten una visión homogénea sobre las herencias recibidas por parte de los regímenes no democráticos previos, por lo que sus intervenciones pueden ser polémicas o contradictorias frente a los intereses de los organismos de derechos humanos que se han erigido como los principales promotores de esas políticas. Este trabajo aporta una manera distinta de acercarse al fenómeno de las políticas de la memoria, más allá del mero análisis histórico que ha predominado hasta la actualidad.

This book by one of Latin America’s leading cultural theorists examines the place of the subject and the role of biographical and autobiographical genres in contemporary culture. Arfuch argues that the on-going proliferation of private and intimate stories – what she calls the ‘biographical space’ – can be seen as symptomatic of the impersonalizing dynamics of contemporary times. Autobiographical genres, however, harbour an intersubjective dimension. The ‘I’ who speaks wants to be heard by another, and the other who listens discovers in autobiography possible points of identification. Autobiographical genres, including those that border on fiction, therefore become spaces in which the singularity of experience opens onto the collective and its historicity in ways that allow us to reflect on the ethical, political, and aesthetic dimensions not only of self-representation but also of life itself. Opening up debate through juxtaposition and dialogue, Arfuch’s own poetic writing moves freely from the Holocaust to Argentina’s last dictatorship and its traumatic memories, and then to the troubled borderlands between Mexico and the United States to show how artists rescue shards of memory that would otherwise be relegated to the dustbin of history. In so doing, she makes us see not only how challenging it is to represent past traumas and violence but also how vitally necessary it is to do so as a political strategy for combating the tides of forgetting and for finding ways of being in common.

Diesen Fragen geht die Monografie nach, die sich am Beispiel zweier lateinamerikanischer Megastädte, Mexiko-Stadt und Buenos Aires, mit der raumproduzierenden Macht öffentlicher Erinnerung befasst. Dabei werden Konzepte einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Stadt- und Erinnerungsforschung mit einem Set aus Raum- und Bildlektüren, ethnografischen Erkundungen und Diskursanalysen zu einer „dichten analytischen Erzählung“ verknüpft. In Anlehnung an die konzeptuelle Losung history takes place, mit der der Kulturhistoriker Karl Schlögel für eine raumbewusste Historie und eine historische Raumforschung plädiert, heißt es für die Studie: memory takes place.
