From Wild Tales to Zama, Argentine cinema has produced some of the most visually striking and critically lauded films of the 2000s. Argentina also boasts some of the most exciting contemporary poetry in the Spanish language. What happens when its film and poetry meet on screen? Moving Verses studies the relationship between poetry and cinema in Argentina. Although both the poetics of cinema and literary adaptation have become established areas of film scholarship in recent years, the diverse modes of exchange between poetry and cinema have received little critical attention. The book analyses how film and poetry transform each another, and how these two expressive media behave when placed into dialogue. Going beyond theories of adaptation, and engaging critically with concepts around intermediality and interdisciplinarity, Moving Verses offers tools and methods for studying both experimental and mainstream film from Latin America and beyond. The corpus includes some of Argentina's most exciting and radical contemporary directors (Raúl Perrone, Gustavo Fontán) as well as established modern masters (María Luisa Bemberg, Eliseo Subiela), and seldom studied experimental projects (Narcisa Hirsch, Claudio Caldini). The critical approach draws on recent works on intermediality and impure cinema to sketch and assess the many and varied ways in which directors read poetry on screen.

Trees have been deliberately connected with houses since they were introduced as a prominent part of architectural design. The relationships of contiguity between houses and trees have existed since ancient times. However, at the end of the 19th century those links became explicit in the design process, as the house emerged as one of the fundamental architectural programs, and as the result of an increasing sensibility towards environmental aspects and the landscape. The first part of this publication is to present a collection of exemplary five houses that evinced explicit relationships with pre-existing trees. The five twentieth century projects are: La Casa (B. Rudofsky, 1969), Cottage Caesar (M. Breuer, 1951), Ville La Roche (Le Corbusier & P. Jeanneret, 1923), Villa Pepa (J. Navarro Baldeweg, 1994) and Hexenhaus (A. & P. Smithson, 1984-2002). The second part of the book contributes three theoretical concerns for the contemporary project, those ones which are established in the process, with respect to time, place and outdoor domesticity in modern western housing. One of these theoretical contributions establishes that any house located on a site finds a significant place in conjunction with the preexisting trees. The second contribution describes the effects in terms of time, in addition to spatial considerations, which trees can contribute to the architectural project. Finally, the establishment of these connections between architecture and trees enlarges the idea of the house: the tree serves to draw the surrounding environment into the house and, as a result, becomes an intrinsic part of the house itself.

Uno de los grandes males que agobian al mundo actualmente, es la desesperanza. Una desesperanza nacida de la frustración, propiciada por la gran crisis económica que nos atosiga y que parece no tener solución, por lo menos en el corto plazo. La idea que se nos vendió, avalada por los medios masivos de comunicación, de un mundo globalizado promisorio, con oportunidades para todos, se desmoronó como un castillo de naipes al primer soplo de inestabilidad. Pero esta situación que ahora padecemos, producto de la avaricia y la falta de escrúpulos más ruin que pueda imaginarse, no se dio de un día para otro; se fue incubando, por años, al interior del sistema financiero internacional como un mal bicho que al hacer su aparición de manera intempestiva, cogió a todo mundo desprevenido y sin saber qué medidas tomar para remediar la situación. Los expertos, emocionados con un sistema económico en expansión, nunca se imaginaron que algo podría salirse del carril desbarrancándose, y arrastrara consigo a la mayoría de los países que participaban en el juego. No pensaron que las triquiñuelas de las que echaron mano, durante tanto tiempo, para enriquecer a unos cuantos vivales, tuvieran un efecto tan expansivo y, por lo mismo, tan devastador, en la mayoría de las sociedades inmiscuidas y por eso mismo, atrapadas irremediablemente en la debacle financiera. LA OTRA MITAD DE NOSOTROS toca el tema de manera puntual, lo mismo que los temas de la injusticia, la educación, la política (la mala política, que acostumbra sentar sus reales en muchos países en el mundo y de la que es muy difícil desprenderse), la religión y la música; de ésta última y de manera especial, hace una semblanza novedosa y conmovedora de Los Beatles, el genial cuarteto de Liverpool, que influyó de manera decisiva y profunda en el ánimo de toda una generación y que sigue causando expectativas y comentarios en los corrillos discográficos, con una visión original y muy personal del autor. No hay tema de importancia relevante que esta obra no toque y lo hace a través de un lenguaje simple, enriquecido con todo tipo de florituras lingüísticas que no solo lo hacen único, sino completamente comprensible y disfrutable en todo momento. La obra consta de ocho capítulos y una posdata; cada capítulo lleva por título, el título de una canción conocida de la década de los setentas y nos atreveríamos a decir que pocas veces en la historia de la literatura universal, el nombre del capítulo tiene tanta afinidad con el tema que retrata, pero, y esto es lo verdaderamente importante, los capítulos se podrían alterar, entremezclar o leerse como un ente individual y aún así, no perdería ni su sentido ni su frescor. De la mano del personaje principal, vamos descubriendo el sub mundo incomprensible, a veces absurdo y hostil, en el que nos movemos constantemente sin percatarnos apenas de su presencia. Vivimos el día a día y los actos que rigen nuestra conducta para con los demás, aquellos que nos son ajenos o extraños son, en el mejor de los casos, de una total arrogancia. En no pocas ocasiones, los miramos con un desprecio poco disimulado, porque los consideramos seres sin valor, objetos que se pueden comprar o vender, insultar o lastimar sin que sintamos culpa por ello. Los valores que regían nuestra conducta, hasta bien entrada la última parte del siglo veinte, se han ido perdiendo poco a poco, para dar paso a una nueva visión del mundo, con enfoques que a muchos nos parecen ruines y perversos. Pero no se piense, por esto, que todo está perdido. A lo largo de su periplo, nuestro personaje recibe constantes muestras de solidaridad y afecto aún de los que nada tienen, de aquellos menos favorecidos por la suerte, lo que demuestra que los seres humanos somos capaces de superar los escollos más difíciles que se nos presenten con un poco de ayuda y que nuestra capacidad de reacción, en momentos críticos y ante los embates del destino, demuestran que nuestra mayor

Pero no son las repeticiones, sino las variantes, precisamente, se afirma, las que la generan. Así Un elefante paranoico, el nuevo libro de poemas de Omar Morgante, que retoma, desde ya, sus viejas obsesiones, sus tópicos y procedimientos recurrentes, a la vez deja ver sutiles -y no tanto- variantes que posibilitan la construcción de una obra admirable que Morgante viene componiendo desde los años noventa con la publicación de El estruendo rasante. Un elefante paranoico, con ese título tan atractivo como críptico, tomado de uno de los poemas que reenvían a Salvador Dalí, abre con reminiscencias bíblicas y se cierra con una afirmación que da cuenta del oficio del poeta según lo entiende Morgante: “Cada uno con sus astillas hace como puede / un sacrificio para los dioses”. Entre un extremo y otro, se despliega un delicado lirismo con abundancia de citas, homenajes y juegos intertextuales (de las leyendas americanas a los mitos griegos; de Li Po y Ezra Pound a Juanele y Vallejo; de Dalí y Buñuel a Gaughin y Frida Kahlo; de Hudson y Charlie Feiling a los Homeros del tango) y con gran pluralidad de tonos y de temas (del ademán amoroso de “la serie de Laurene” a los breves poemas que trabajan sobre conceptos teóricos de “la serie del salmón”). En su búsqueda formal de extrema minucia, Omar Morgante exhibe nuevamente su excelencia poética en la rigurosa elaboración de la palabra a la hora de producir nuevos sentidos. Carlos Cavalchini
