Pocas veces la ciencia filológica argentina aportó tan considerable empresa concebida y realizada sobre la base de la reconsideración de la obra de Juan Ruiz. Es evidente que se ha optado por un camino arduo y difícil, aunque por demás fructífero. María R. Lida de Malkiel inicia su trabajo trazando una breve semblanza del Juan Ruiz histórico y rechaza la interpretación tradicional que consideraba la obra una especie de autobiografía, pero la acepta como un reflejo exacto de la visión del autor y de su circunstancia. La autora prosigue la investigación analizando lo doctrinal, lo lírico y lo narrativo. El estilo, el lenguaje, los recursos empleados por el Arcipreste, ya sea para conquistar el ánimo del oyente, ya sea para apurar e intensificar un pasaje dramático, se estudian mediante un mecanismo crítico y erudito que promueve el enlace entre la obra y el lector, profundizado hasta los límites que puede alcanzar la ciencia literaria actual. El texto va acompañado de notas interpoladas que clarifican el verso y demuestran las distintas fuentes que influyeron en su autor. La exégesis se vuelve entonces, total y exhaustiva, entre la erudición y la sensibilidad. La señora de Malkiel procura ubicar la obraen su ámbito histórico-cultural, donde Juan Ruiz era un intelectual europeo en actitud vital; rasgo característico entre sectores del clero de su época. Esa visión objetiva de la realidad se va encarnando en los escritores más representativos de España y ha sido un constante en el curso de los siglos.

A masterpiece in the tradition of the Decameron and the Canterbury Tales, Juan Ruiz's fourteenth-century Spanish narrative poem combines the comic and the serious, the bawdy and the practical, the satiric and the tender, the devout and the blasphemous. In a first prose translation, Professors Mignani and Di Cesare succeed in conveying the vitality and sly humor of the original. The poem consists of a loosely unified series of fourteen amorous adventures of the Archpriest of Hita, interlaced with debates, fabliaux, fables, and exempla. Ruiz suggests that while man ought to seek buen amor (true love, or love of God), he is prone to loco amor, or worldly love. The Book proposes to show human folly so that men may be forewarned of the bad and choose the good. The episodes related in the stanzas and in songs in various lyrical styles parody such conventions as courtly love, epic battle, or church ritual. Ruiz was clearly fascinated by the concrete, as well as the allegorical, for his episodes have dates and actual settings, and popular speech is incorporated into his verses. In their introduction, the translators survey the major scholarly studies of the poem and offer their own critical reading of it. Their annotated bibliography and notes to the translation will be useful to students as well as scholars.
