La obra a la que el romántico José Zorrilla debe su fama es Don Juan Tenorio (1844), la más popular en el teatro español y que se sigue poniendo en escena todos los años desde su estreno. El argumento se basa en la leyenda de Don Juan pero esta vez representa a un libertino alardoso, al que sólo puede enmendar el amor y un final arrepentimiento de sus pecados para alcanzar la vida eterna. El siglo XIX, con el romanticismo, cambió el tratamiento del personaje. Hasta ese momento don Juan siempre acaba castigado por sus pecados en el infierno;el romanticismo, que se sentía atraído por personajes rebeldes y amantes de la libertad, se sintió fascinado por esta figura, analiza su satanismo y teoriza sobre si el seductor, que encarna el mal, se siente culpable o no, y si puede salvarse. En la obra se encuentran diversos efectos fantásticos y sobrenaturales. La acción, transcurre en Sevilla durante el año 1545. Los cuatro primeros actos transcurren en una sola noche y los otros tres cinco años después y en una única noche. La obra tiene un final feliz ya que el amor triunfa y también que podemos ganar el cielo con un arrepentimiento oportuno: «…que si es verdad / que un punto de contrición / da al alma la salvación / de toda una eternidad, / yo, santo Dios, creo en ti…»
