The role of scents, smells, fragrances, and odours in opera has long been neglected, just as how much opera and its stars have influenced the world of perfumery from the nineteenth century to the present day. In the first book-length study on the topic, Professor Mary May Robertson explores the relationship between opera, perfumes, and their respective protagonists in order to map out the previously undiscussed connection between the two. Through compelling close readings of librettos and rigorous research through thousands of bottles of perfume, the reader will come to appreciate and recognise the influences and exchanges between operas and perfumes and their ultimate marriage in the previously unrecognised genre of Operatic Perfumes, which is to say, perfumes named after operas, composers, and their divas.

Therefore, the bog, the marsh, the heath, in purple or grey – the bramble, yet the swamp – these are familiar settings for research and truth. Our cognitive skills and their enlightening studies in classrooms, everyday walks, traumatic events, as well as alternations in natural rhythming – these we bring inside ourselves to see what we may see – perhaps a rose; the rose grows into much of itself, into its rarity of beauty, within the dark, and as a metaphor of truth, more out of solitude and personal embracing of ultimately finding.

Die Rezeption des nô- und kabuki-Theaters führte zu einer Neuperspektivierung der französischen Theatergeschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. Der Einfluss des japanischen Theaters in Frankreich prägte die verschiedenen Rezeptionsphasen der japanischen Entität und zeichnete sich zudem durch einen wechselseitigen Spiegeleffekt zwischen Frankreich und Japan aus, der den Blick auf die Kultur und Kunst weiterentwickelt hat und somit zu einer kosmopolitischen Lesung des Theaters beigetragen hat. Die analysierten Autoren – Paul Claudel, Jean Genet und Gabriel Cousin – haben nicht nur kulturelle, szenische und rituelle Signifikanten des japanischen Theaters eins zu eins reproduziert, sondern diese durch einen neuen Kodierungsprozess, der von ihren ästhetischen und soziokulturellen Ideen geprägt war, verändert und weiterentwickelt. L'influence du théâtre japonais en France a non seulement fortement imprégné les différentes phases de réception de l'entité nipponne, mais s'est également manifestée par un effet de miroir réciproque entre la France et le Japon, créant ainsi un regard qui a fait évoluer l'art et la culture tout en proposant une lecture cosmopolite du théâtre.
