Quizá lleguemos a ello. No importa. Soy testigo y artífice del proceso. Qué más puedo pedir

Between Two Worlds is a lifeÍs work in poetry by the famous folklorist, novelist and mentor of at least two generations, of Chicano scholars and writers. Between Two Worlds is a selection of ParedesÍ poetry from the 1930s and 1940sm sine if which was published in Texas newspapers. Consequently the poetry has both historical and literary merit. Paredes calls his poems ñthe scribblings of a ïproto-ChicanoÍ of a half-century ago.î He is indeed the one clear forerunner of the flourishing of Chicano literature that occurred in the last two decades; his themes, styles and political stances have all become the mainstays of todayÍs literature and world view.

The Borderlands Of Culture written by Ramón Saldívar and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-04 with Social Science categories.

Poet, novelist, journalist, and ethnographer, Américo Paredes (1915–1999) was a pioneering figure in Mexican American border studies and a founder of Chicano studies. Paredes taught literature and anthropology at the University of Texas, Austin for decades, and his ethnographic and literary critical work laid the groundwork for subsequent scholarship on the folktales, legends, and riddles of Mexican Americans. In this beautifully written literary history, the distinguished scholar Ramón Saldívar establishes Paredes’s preeminent place in writing the contested cultural history of the south Texas borderlands. At the same time, Saldívar reveals Paredes as a precursor to the “new” American cultural studies by showing how he perceptively negotiated the contradictions between the national and transnational forces at work in the Americas in the nascent era of globalization. Saldívar demonstrates how Paredes’s poetry, prose, and journalism prefigured his later work as a folklorist and ethnographer. In song, story, and poetry, Paredes first developed the themes and issues that would be central to his celebrated later work on the “border studies” or “anthropology of the borderlands.” Saldívar describes how Paredes’s experiences as an American soldier, journalist, and humanitarian aid worker in Asia shaped his understanding of the relations between Anglos and Mexicans in the borderlands of south Texas and of national and ethnic identities more broadly. Saldívar was a friend of Paredes, and part of The Borderlands of Culture is told in Paredes’s own words. By explaining how Paredes’s work engaged with issues central to contemporary scholarship, Saldívar extends Paredes’s intellectual project and shows how it contributes to the remapping of the field of American studies from a transnational perspective.

Spanish Literature written by David William Foster and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Hispanic studies categories.

Gathered to meet the rising upsurge of interest in Spain, this collection features major critical articles dealing with the authors and texts customarily taught in colleges and universities in the United States. The articles are in English and Spanish, with a predominance of the former. The material is organized to reflect the common chronological and period divisions of the academic curriculum, and is clustered around major literary figures, with a mix of general articles on the writers and texts that are most commonly included in anthologies. Spanish literature and culture have attracted a renewed interest since the return to constitutional democracy in the mid-1970s and the growing participation of Spain in the world economy and its incorporation into the European common market. Spanish literature balances a participation in the major literary movements of European literature in general with unique features of Hispanic culture that are a consequence of the special circumstances of its geography, especially the ways in which it historically served as a conduit to Europe of Arabic and Jewish cultures. Figures of international acclaim like Federico Garc'a Lorca, Miguel de Unamuno, and Jose Ortega y Gasset, Nobel prizewinners like Vicente Aleixandre and Camilo Jose Cela, the universality of Miguel de Cervantes, without whom the modern novel would not have been possible, the uniqueness of the Hispanic ballad tradition, mystic poets like San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa Jesus, and the picaresque tradition are some of the major reference points for the singularity of Spanish literary culture. All of this literary activity has inspired innumerable dissertations, theses, and books, published by academic and trade presses, as well as articles in journals traditionally devoted to literary history and philosophy, along with new specialized journals and the organization of national and international congresses on national and cultural issues, writers, and schools of writing. These three volumesselect the most seminal works on Spanish literature and collect them in one place for scholars and students alike. This three volume collection of reprinted articles is also available as individual volumes priced at $80.00/Y [Can. $120.00/Y]: * Volume 1.Theoretical Debates0815335636 Volume 2.From Origins to the 18th Century0815335644 Volume 3.The Modern Period0185335652

Accented America written by Joshua L. Miller and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-21 with Literary Criticism categories.

American literary works written in the heyday of modernism between the 1890s and 1940s were playfully, painfully, and ambivalently engaged with language politics. The immigrant waves of the period fed into writers' aesthetic experimentation; their works, in turn, rewired ideas about national identity along with literary form. Accented America looks at the long history of English-Only Americanism-the political claim that U.S. citizens must speak a singular, shared American tongue-and traces its action in the language workshop that is literature. The broadly multi-ethnic set of writers brought into conversation here-including Gertrude Stein, Jean Toomer, Henry Roth, Nella Larsen, John Dos Passos, Lionel Trilling, Américo Paredes, and Carlos Bulosan-reflect the massive demographic shifts taking place during the interwar years. These authors share an acute awareness of linguistic standardization while also following the defamiliarizing sway produced by experimentation with invented and improper literary vernaculars. Rather than confirming the powerfully seductive subtext of monolingualism-that those who speak alike are ethically and politically likeminded-multilingual modernists compose literature that speaks to a country of synthetic syntaxes, singular hybrids, and enduring strangeness.
