Se explica qué entendemos por estructuralismo y por qué razón las ideas estructuralistas ocupan aún hoy en día un lugar preeminente en el ámbito de la Lingüística. Para los estructuralistas, el lenguaje es un sistema autónomo y altamente organizado, cuya historia sería la de un conjunto de cambios sucesivos desde un estado del sistema a otro diferente. Esta idea tiene sus orígenes en el siglo XIX y fue desarrollada en el XX por Saussure y por sus discípulos, incluyendo los lingüistas que integraron la escuela liderada por Bloomfield en Estados Unidos. Merced, en particular, a la obra de Chomsky, el estructuralismo ha conservado buena parte de la influencia que llegó a tener.
