This volume explores the multiple aspects of cyclical syntactic change from a wide range of empirical perspectives. The notion of 'linguistic cycle' has long been recognized as being relevant to the description of many processes of language change. In grammaticalization, a given linguistic form loses its lexical meaning - and sometimes some of its phonological content - and then gradually weakens until it ultimately vanishes. This change becomes cyclical when the grammaticalized form is replaced by an innovative item, which can then develop along exactly the same pathway. But cyclical changes have also been observed in language change outside of grammaticalization proper. The chapters in this book reflect the growing interest in the phenomenon of grammaticalization and cyclicity in generative syntax, with topics including the diachrony of negation, the syntax of determiners and pronominal clitics, the internal structure of wh-words and logical operators, cyclical changes in argument structure, and the relationship between morphology and syntax. The contributions draw on data from multiple language families, such as Indo-European, Semitic, Japonic, and Athabascan. The volume combines empirical descriptions of novel comparative data with detailed theoretical analysis, and will appeal to historical linguists working in formal and usage-based frameworks, as well as to typologists and scholars interested in language variation and change more broadly.

In this book, the traditional definition of ‘grammaticalization’ is challenged in the light of current developments in grammar theory. The main innovation of this approach is the focus on the feature composition of lexical items. From this perspective, the loss of past participle agreement in Catalan is analyzed on the basis of newly collected data as a consequence of the grammaticalization of formal features. The emergence of syntactic formal features through grammaticalization is understood as a last-resort repair mechanism for pragmatically costly derivations. Further far-reaching implications of this proposal under discussion are: the interplay between (re-)parametrization, economy, cyclicity, and grammaticalization; the characterization of free variation under a modified version of the Interface Hypothesis; and the precedence of syntactic over morphological change. This book is not only of interest to specialists in Romance languages but also to anyone working on diachronic linguistics.

La documentació dels arxius aragonesos que conserven originals redactats en català no permet, en la majoria dels casos, remuntar-se més enllà del segle XIV; per aquest motiu, tant des d’una perspectiva filològica com històrica, els documents de la baixa edat mitjana, en particular, i la resta de testimonis que es custodien en els fons aragonesos, en general, contribueixen a la recopilació de referències essencials sobre la llengua antiga de l’Aragó catalanòfon. En la present publicació s’ofereix l’edició de 50 manuscrits en pergamí del segle XIV, en els quals són protagonistes els pobles i la gent del Matarranya (Terol), i s’hi analitza la llengua catalana reflectida en aquella scripta. Tot i que, en general, no s’hi perceben particularitats lingüístiques notables, almenys si es contrasten els textos amb altres de la mateixa sincronia, no hi ha dubte que aquesta recerca esdevé una aportació fonamental per conèixer l’estat del català en aquella època dins un territori administrativament aragonès.

Nueva aportación para conocer el estado del catalán en Aragón en la Edad Media. Contiene una edición crítica de 46 manuscritos en formato pergamino del siglo xiv pertenecientes al antiguo cabildo de San Vicente de Roda, en la Ribagorza (Huesca). Además, la obra ofrece un minucioso estudio lingüístico en el que se analizan aspectos gráficos, fonéticos, morfológicos y léxicos de los documentos, así como un capítulo dedicado a la onomástica. Si bien es cierto que la regularidad de esta scripta es bastante uniforme —en cuanto que participa de rasgos generales del catalán en su conjunto—, se observan rasgos dialectales que se adscriben claramente al catalán noroccidental y que vienen a confirmar, aunque de manera muy tímida, la convivencia entre escritura y oralidad.
