Fidèle à son principal objet, ce livre est une (longue) errance, un vagabondage assez spécial, hasardeux et répétitif à la fois, qui ne se réclame d'aucune perspective systématique mais croise au contraire les regards, les disciplines : histoire, droit, sociologie, psychologie, biologie et médecine, technologie... Sans doute le vagabondage est-il un thème mythique, aussi ancien que l'Homme lui-même et qui trouve, dans notre histoire, de multiples expressions. Pourtant, malgré l'ambiguïté des valeurs que maintient en particulier la tradition franciscaine, il est une époque (1880-1910) où le vagabond devient, sur le fond d'une politique rigoureuse des populations ouvrières urbaines, un enjeu passionné. Il désigne la forme ultime d'un pathologique social qui gouverne d'autres catégories d'exclus (mendiants, clochards, prostituées, chômeurs, mauvais pauvres...) et dont on prévoit alors la suppression définitive : c'est, de fait, le premier " génocide scientifique " des temps modernes, dérisoire et banal peut-être mais qui prélude à d'autres, moins " bénins ". En même temps, le vagabond devient un objet privilégié de la médecine mentale en plein développement : Charcot crée pour le qualifier, en 1888, la notion d'Automate ambulatoire. On peut s'interroger alors sur la cohérence profonde de ce monde industriel puisque la même image, l'Automate, sert à désigner de manière " scientifique " à la fois le déchet humain, le résidu insupportable et l'idéal du nouvel " homme technique " vissé à sa fonction productive, assimilé à la Machine, normalisé dans son travail, sa vie et sa pensée. Au-delà de cette époque cruciale, l'ambivalence en question nous renvoie à des doctrines aussi fondamentales que le Mécanisme " cartésien " revu et corrigé dans le nouveau contexte, le Darwinisme (et ses applications sociales), également certaines conceptions de la dégénérescence, de l'hérédité qui n'ont pas dit aujourd'hui leur dernier mot. Finalement c'est la question philosophique de l'Individu qui peut sans doute servir de boussole dans ce voyage au bout de la nuit des vagabonds. La fin de l'individu qui se réfracte dans le miroir brisé du vagabondage (où tremble encore le souvenir rêvé de quelque enfance de l'humanité) s'inscrit dans une nouvelle logique : celle d'une nature devenue vraiment mauvaise ; celle surtout d'un nouveau personnage qui prend force dans l'histoire du XIXe siècle et n'a cessé depuis lors de hanter nos nuits comme un vieux fantôme vagabond : la Mort.
