Oppure no: dobbiamo rimanere nella moneta unica ma "battere i pugni sul tavolo", rompere i vincoli del rigore, accettare il fallimento delle istituzioni comunitarie e tornare a una "Europa dei popoli", qualunque cosa questo voglia dire. Ma al di là degli slogan, quasi nessuno sa cosa sia successo davvero: come si è passati dalla crisi delle banche a quella degli Stati e poi di nuovo delle banche? Di questo circolo vizioso senza precedenti tra debito privato e debito pubblico, la Bce è la maggiore responsabile o l'unica soluzione possibile? Consegnare il destino dell'Europa alla Banca centrale è l'inevitabile conseguenza del vuoto della politica o una preoccupante sconfitta della democrazia? The crisis of the Eurozone has had a significant impact on the politics of Europe. In many countries, the euro was largely interpreted by elites as a development that would ameliorate their nations’ problems. However, recent events have proven the contrary, with the rise of radical right-wing politics and populism across the continent. This book investigates the politics of the euro, with a primary focus on Italy, but also with additional chapters on the UK and Germany. Using a range of original and secondary data, it reconstructs how the euro was interpreted by both elites and non-elites from the late nineties to 2010. By recruiting a large sample of non-elites, it examines perceptions of the euro and the ways in which these views allowed for the justification of painful austerity measures required to enter the Economic and Monetary Union. In doing so, it sheds light on the ways in which non-elites interpret complex political objects like the euro and provides a systemic comparison of the cognitive schema of non-elites and elites. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of the European Union, European politics, Italian politics, comparative politics and political economy.

This edited collection presents an economic history of Catalonia and its economic crises, from Roman times to the political difficulties of the present day. In no other country in Europe has national identity been so closely bound to memories of the war. Italy’s Republic was born of World War II, its constitution defined by anti-Fascism, its parties self-identified with national Resistance. Because of their importance to the nation’s identity, the nature and meaning of the war have been the focus of great contention, from 1943 to the present day. In recent years Italy has taken on a national evaluation of the more troubling and contested aspects of its role in the war, including its support of Fascism and collaboration after 1943, its treatment of Jews and other minorities, deep national divisions that created a civil war between 1943 and 1945, and the centrality of war myth to lingering postwar problems. Scholars of Italian history, literature, and cinema play a fundamental role in this appraisal, and this volume of essays attests to the importance of film and literature to the ways in which changing political, social and cultural imperatives have altered the war’s memory. These articles expand our understanding of the shifting phases in national memory by highlighting significant features of each era’s portrayal of the war.
