La musicología ha tendido a ver el siglo XVIII español como una etapa de decadencia. From the fifteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century, devotional music played a fundamental role in the Iberian world. Songs in the vernacular, usually referred to by the generic name of 'villancico', but including forms as varied as madrigals, ensaladas, tonos, cantatas or even oratorios, were regularly performed at many religious feasts in major churches, royal and private chapels, convents and in monasteries. These compositions appear to have progressively fulfilled or supplemented the role occupied by the Latin motet in other countries and, as they were often composed anew for each celebration, the surviving sources vastly outnumber those of Latin compositions; they can be counted in tens of thousands. The close relationship with secular genres, both musical, literary and performative, turned these compositions into a major vehicle for dissemination of vernacular styles throughout the Iberian world. This model of musical production was also cultivated in Portugal and rapidly exported to the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in America and Asia. In many cases, the villancico repertory represents the oldest surviving source of music produced in these regions, thus affording it a primary role in the construction of national identities. The sixteen essays in this volume explore the development of devotional music in the Iberian world in this period, providing the first broad-based survey of this important genre.

La Catedral de Ávila como Institución Musical durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII es un estudio de contextualización histórica sobre la actividad musical de la Catedral de Ávila como una Institución insertada y condicionada por su contexto urbano. Para ello, hemos analizado: los órganos de gobierno, la economía catedralicia, la estructura de la capilla de música catedralicia durante los magisterios de Alfonso Vaz de Acosta (1641-1660), Gaspar de Liceras Isla (1660-1681), Juan Bonet de Paredes (1682-1684) y Juan Cedazo (1685-1714), así como su llegada a Ávila, sus vidas, sus funciones, sus obligaciones diarias y los acontecimientos más relevantes del funcionamiento de la capilla musical junto a una descripción pormenorizada de su plantilla, la actuación del Cabildo como Institución frente al desarrollo de la música en la catedral de Ávila, junto a la influencia de los Estatutos y Contratos Capitulares en la financiación de la música y la gestión interna de la capilla a través de la provisión de plazas, concesión de licencias, empleos, permisos y sanciones con disposiciones bien definidas aplicables a maestros, cantores y ministriles. Este trabajo sobre la catedral de Ávila como Institución Musical durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII es una muestra de lo que supusieron las prácticas musicales en la vida de las instituciones catedralicias españolas en ese período al desarrollo de la vida social y civil de la ciudad abulense, teniendo presente el importante hecho de que con Vaz de Acosta se introduce el arpa en 1642 por primera vez en la agrupación instrumental de esta catedral, en 1656 surge en la plantilla catedralicia un segundo organista y, coincidiendo con los momentos más brillantes de la capilla, en 1699 la catedral de Ávila introdujo en su plantilla instrumental los violines y violones.
