In 1995, on the thirtieth anniversary of Tanizaki Jun’ichiro’s death, Adriana Boscaro organized an international conference in Venice that had an unusally lasting effect on the study of this major Japanese novelist. Thanks to Boscaro’s energetic commitment, Venice became a center for Tanizaki studies that produced two volumes of conference proceedings now considered foundational for all scholarly works on Tanizaki. In the years before and after the Venice Conference, Boscaro and her students published an abundance of works on Tanizaki and translations of his writings, contributing to his literary success in Italy and internationally. The Grand Old Man and the Great Tradition honors Boscaro’s work by collecting nine essays on Tanizaki’s position in relation to the “great tradition” of Japanese classical literature. To open the collection, Edward Seidensticker contributes a provocative essay on literary styles and the task of translating Genji into a modern language. Gaye Rowley and Ibuki Kazuko also consider Tanizaki’s Genji translations, from a completely different point of view, documenting the author’s three separate translation efforts. Aileen Gatten turns to the influence of Heian narrative methods on Tanizaki’s fiction, arguing that his classicism, far from being superficial, “reflects a deep sensitivity to Heian narrative.” Tzevetana Kristeva holds a different perspective on Tanizaki’s classicism, singling out specific aspects of Tanizaki’s eroticism as the basis of comparison. The next two essays emphasize Tanizaki’s experimental engagement with the classical literary genres—Amy V. Heinrich treats the understudied poetry, and Bonaventura Ruperti considers a 1933 essay on performance arts. Taking up cinema, Roberta Novelli focuses on the novel Manji, exploring how it was recast for the screen by Masumura Yasuzo. The volume concludes with two contributions interpreting Tanizaki’s works in the light of Western and Meiji literary traditions: Paul McCarthy considers Nabokovas a point of comparison, and Jacqueline Pigeot conducts a groundbreaking comparison with a novel by Natsume Soseki.

Gli scrittori giapponesi del periodo Meiji (1868-1912) erano affascinati dalla luce, che attraverso lo sviluppo della tecnologia aveva illuminato le buie città del paese. La «città senza notte», Tōkyō, simboleggiava la trasformazione del Giappone durante l’epoca della modernizzazione e occidentalizzazione. La luce è un elemento essenziale nei primi racconti di Tanizaki, siano i raggi del sole che fanno risaltare la brillantezza del tatuaggio in Shisei (Il tatuaggio) o la luminosità del candore della pelle delle donne occidentali: bianco e bellezza sono sinonimi. Ma ciò che accentua e dà valore al bianco è l’oscurità. Il bianco in sé non crea nessun effetto estetico, se non nella contrapposizione con il nero. Il bello sta in quello spazio indefinito, in quel vuoto dove si addensa l’ombra che rende la bellezza dell’arte giapponese inseparabile dall’oscurità. Un valore che non è ovvio, ma che si comprende solo alla luce dell’estetica classica nipponica. In In’ei raisan (lett. Elogio dell’ombra) del 1933, questa sensibilità tradizionale è posta come antitetica a quella del moderno Occidente: non è un’inversione di tendenza nei gusti estetici dello scrittore, né un’invettiva contro la modernità, ma la presa di coscienza di come il Paese sia cambiato seguendo un modello di occidentalizzazione che Tanizaki non condivideva. L’autore riflette sulla modernità nella vita quotidiana degli anni trenta, partendo dall’architettura della casa e dai problemi affrontati da chi vuole arredare un’abitazione mantenendo la tradizione e lo stile giapponesi. Nella conclusione riconosce che c’è un ambito dove può ancora concretizzarsi l’estetica dell’ombra: quello dell’arte e della letteratura.

Shunsuke è un anziano e celebre scrittore, che dubita delle proprie qualità artistiche e soffre della propria bruttezza e mancanza di seduzione, che gli hanno fatto sviluppare una forma di misoginia. Yūichi invece è un bellissimo giovane, adorato da donne e uomini, e lo stesso Shunsuke ne subisce il fascino. Quando Yūichi, sul punto di sposarsi, gli svela di provare desideri omosessuali, il vecchio gli propone un patto che lo trasformerà nel suo strumento di vendetta. A causa del suo individualismo narcisista, del carattere glaciale e della voluttà che prova a far soffrire chi lo ama, il giovane è il soggetto perfetto per conquistare le donne e poi lasciarle crudelmente vendicando così tutti gli abbandoni subiti da Shunsuke. Lo scrittore in cambio lo introdurrà alla vita sessuale e al corteggiamento delle donne, concedendogli anche il prestito in denaro che gli occorre, e intanto lui frequenterà locali e uomini gay. Tra le braccia di Yūichi cade anche la bella, giovane e infelice Yasuko, che ha rifiutato Shunsuke. I due si sposano, ma lui la tradisce e non la amerà mai, interessato comè a soddisfare solo il proprio piacere carnale con begli uomini e a intessere sempre nuove relazioni omo ed eterosessuali che gli rimandano limmagine della propria bellezza. Il patto però nel corso del romanzo a poco a poco si incrina: Yūichi comincia a sottrarsi alla guida di Shunsuke, si riavvicina alla realtà delle relazioni e alla moglie che gli partorisce una figlia, anche se non intacca il suo amore di sé. Mentre lo scrittore, conclusa la sua opera, esce di scena.
