Alors que l’on s’approche de Pessah, la Pâque juive, la belle Rachel Lévita, fille d'un d'un notable, promise à l’étudiant Haïm Bar Chelomo, est enlevée par des malfrats à la solde d’Adalbert Courteheuse, un lointain cousin du duc de Normandie. Ce personnage ignoble, physiquement et moralement, va être à l’origine d’un drame qui plongera la communauté juive tout entière dans la désolation. Un groupe d’étudiants se constituera en « Vengeurs », bien décidés à poursuivre les meurtriers de Rachel. Mais comment concilier la vengeance avec le respect de la Loi de Moïse ? À travers un récit vivant et coloré, mêlant personnages historiques et héros de fiction, l’auteur reconstitue la vie et les préoccupations d’une communauté méconnue, celle des Juifs de Normandie au Moyen Âge. EXTRAIT En ce début du printemps de l’an de grâce 1149, 4909 du calendrier hébraïque, un temps particulièrement doux baignait Rodom, l’ancienne Rothomagus des Gaulois, devenue capitale des Vikings. Depuis plusieurs heures le Clos-aux-Juifs, la terra judaeorum, s’était assoupi. Dans la rue aux Juifs, le vicus judaeorum, les vieilles maisons, impeccablement alignées, dormaient du sommeil des justes. La tour monumentale de la Grande Synagogue, qui dominait tout le quartier, semblait veiller jalousement sur son petit monde. Même l’Hôtel Bonnevie, où, régulièrement, des fêtes étaient données qui maintenaient dans le Clos, jusqu’à une heure tardive de la nuit, une certaine animation, s’était endormi. Après avoir contourné la place du Clos-aux-Juifs qui avait, au fil des ans, donné son nom à tout le quartier, puis discrètement remonté la rue principale en prenant toutes les précautions et en maintenant entre eux une bonne distance, ils avaient emprunté tout un dédale de ruelles pour arriver aux portes de la ville. À la vue des premiers arbres, Haïm fit un petit signe de la main à Rachel. Elle comprit immédiatement et se rapprocha prestement. Elle n’avait posé aucune question sur la destination finale de leur escapade. Sa confiance en Haïm était telle qu’elle aurait tout donné, tout sacrifié pour lui. Elle l’aimait d’un amour inconsidéré. Jamais, avant d’avoir, il y a près d’un an, croisé son regard lors d’une réception chez les Bonnevie, elle n’avait éprouvé de tels sentiments. Elle venait d’avoir dix-sept ans. Il est, par ailleurs, vice-président mondial de la JJAC (Justice for Jews from Arab Countries) qui siège à New York. AESTHETICIZING PRAGMATICS The Gamut of Pragmatics Pragmatics emerged among the sciences of language at the end of the 1960's in reaction to certain totalizing models in linguistics: structuralism (primarily in Europe) and generative grammar (initially in the United States). Certain disciples of Chomsky became dissatisfied with autono mous syntax and later with generative semantics: they decided to break away from their mentor. Whereas Chomsky continued to talk a lot about very little, they defied him by speaking very suggestively about an exces sively broad range of phenomena. Pragmatics -which Bar-Hillel consid ered as a 'wastebasket discipline' in the fifties - nevertheless gained respectability. The history of pragmatics spans, of course, much more than three decades. The Stoic conception of language, in the shadow of the great Greek tradition and therefore intensely subversive, had in fact a pragmatic aim. The term pragmatisch appears in Kant: it expresses a relation with a human goal, this goal being only determinable within a community. This characterization naturally inspires the pragmaticism of l the Neo-Kantian Charles Sanders Peirce . It is this Kant-Peirce lineage that led to Morris and Carnap's rather bland conceptions of pragmatics, after the heavy losses incurred by positivism and behaviorism. In any case, despite the constant presence of a pragmatic approach in the history of thought, this reassessment of pragmatics (against the triumphs proclaimed by structuralism and generativism) was experienced as a Significant break through. A whole range of pragmatics came to the attention of linguists.
