Potranno questi riﬂettere che, siccome ne' Caratteri di Teofrasto, nelle Satire di Orazio, di Giuvenale, 'nelle antiche commedie e in altri libri dell'anime passate negli Elisi. Si trovano delle pitture d'uomini viventi og gidi; nella Marfisa bizzarra, da qui a due secoli, se 'l libro fosse fortunato a segno d'aver tanto di vita, si troveranno de' veri disegni d'uomini viventi in allora. Non so s'io mi debba dire spero o temo che la premessa mia giustificazione sia inutile. Nessuno si vedrà figurato negli oggetti difettosi posti nella Marfisa, e piuttosto si rileverà ne' virtuosi. La lettura e le osservazioni mi faranno titubare e quasi credere che gli uo m1nx morti sieno stati simili ai viventi, e che con tutte le satire, le derisioni al vizio e i ricordi buoni, gli uomini che nasce ranno abbiano da non esser differenti dagli uomini morti e dai uomini che oggidi vivono con noi. Il difetto, riguardo ai prin cipi dell'educazione, e benissimo conosciuto da' p0p01i, ma la considerazione che abbiamo di noi medesimi lo fa sempre scor gere facilmente dall'uomo nell'altro uomo e difficilmente in se stesso. Solo perché in ogni secolo si è procurato di scemare i difetti nelle genti, certi scrittori ebbero dell'applauso: vi sarà in ogni secolo chi tenterà di acquistarsi qualche nome per questa via. Se poi si giunga per questa via a cagionare alcuna riforma nei viziosi costumi, io mi contenterò di rimanere in dubbio per non tralasciare di farlo. Il governo di Londra ha 'sperato in ciò del benefizio sopra a' suoi popoli, e perciò lasciò correre Lo spettatore.
