Molte donne, ma anche tanti uomini, adulti, ma anche tanti giovani, chiedono alla chirurgia plastica di correggere un profilo, di dare più personalità a un volto, di sottolineare una parte del corpo ritenuta inadeguata rispetto ai modelli correnti e ai propri desideri. Sarebbe intuitivo porre un confine di ragionevolezza fra gli interventi richiesti da malformazioni o incidenti che hanno alterato l’aspetto o la funzionalità di una parte del corpo e quelli che non hanno una funzione terapeutica. Tuttavia, le cose sono più complesse. La persona vive il proprio corpo come un’esperienza profondamente unitaria, in un continuo rimando di interiorità ed esteriorità. Non sempre, per tante e diverse ragioni, il nostro volto riesce ad esprimere ciò che siamo e ci sentiamo di essere: un naso troppo pronunciato, le orecchie ad ansa, una rete di rughe anzi tempo non sono certo patologiche e dovrebbero, anzi, essere accolte come peculiarità personali, ma talora possono creare disagi, ostacoli alla vita sociale e ansia. Il confine tra giusto e ingiusto potrebbe allora essere posto altrove, risolvendo la dualità ambigua del termine «persona», che in origine indicava la maschera che copriva il volto degli attori nel teatro greco e romano e conferiva loro l’aspetto più appropriato per impersonare, appunto, un ruolo. Si può allora tracciare un confine fra una chirurgia che aiuta un volto ad esprimere con pienezza la verità della persona e una chirurgia che, noncurante dell’interiorità, delle storie, della vita, sa solo creare e ripetere all’infinito maschere senz’anima?
