Pocos temas -incluso hoy día- resultan tan polémicos y controvertidos como el de la historia de la Masonería. Los datos y testimonios pasados de escritor a escritor, desde el siglo XIX hasta nuestros días, no han sido presentados con el sustento documental ni la valoración crítica mínimamente exigibles para aceptar su valor documental. El intento de este estudio sobre la Masonería española en el siglo XVIII es, precisamente, el de enfrentarse con el tema siguiendo las exigencias del método de investigación más rigurosa. Su objeto es doble: por un lado, estudiar los orígenes de la Masonería española hasta el siglo XIX, intentando aclarar, entre otras cosas, qué era la Masonería en el siglo XVIII, cómo actuaba, las logias existentes en España y quiénes estaban afiliados a ellas, y, sobre todo, el mito de la influencia de “la Masonería” en la política general de los reyes Carlos III y Carlos IV; el otro aspecto estudiado, más importante si cabe, es el de las relaciones entre la Iglesia Católica y la Masonería a lo largo de este período. La documentación del Archivo Secreto Vaticano; así como la procedente de diversos archivos -tanto masónicos como los de la Inquisición-, han proporcionado al autor un material, hasta ahora inédito, que le ha permitido llegar a conclusiones verdaderamente reveladoras.José A. Ferrer Benimeli, profesor de historia contemporánea de la Universidad de Zaragoza, es destacado especialista en la historia de la Masonería.
