La relativa dispersión de la tradición humanística hispánica exige un centramiento inequívoco, por encima de los más antiguos Séneca y Quintiliano, en Juan Luis Vives. Las tres figuras definen de la manera más característica la tradición general del humanismo hispano, pero Vives representa sin duda su ágil inserción moderna. En nuestro tiempo, sin embargo, pese a la no interrumpida especialización de los estudios, esa inserción ha devenido un tanto difusa. De otra parte, en una época como la actual, derivada entre poshumanismo y posverdad, la exigencia del lenguaje como centro del hombre y la cultura, ha devenido perentoria. Si la Escuela de Salamanca define el gran pensamiento sustantivo del Siglo de Oro, como un grueso magma teórico, moral, jurídico, económico, y dañado por una historiografía general poco sostenible, el converso valenciano Luis Vives define la individualidad prestigiosa de una posteridad que la propia vida del personaje, permitió fuera conducida a deslocalización. Vives es un autor inequívoco para la Colección Verbum Mayor y el Instituto Juan Andrés. Está fuera de toda duda la gran significación de Vives, hombre de letras y reformador de la educación del siglo XVI, para la cultura humanística europea. Dentro de ésta, el valor y la fuerte incidencia de su pensamiento lingüístico y pedagógico no ha devenido sin embargo un cuerpo de criterios perfilados y actualmente bien transmitidos. La presente propuesta gira desde una presentación general humanística del pensamiento del autor hasta una concreción metodológica o aplicativa. La perspectiva de Vives acerca de la educación, en sentido tanto teórico como práctico, identifica plenamente, y éste es el fuerte que ha sido tradicionalmente reconocido, un criterio humanístico renovador, anclado en el saber del lenguaje y alternativo de la escolástica. El concepto de mediación entendemos que es el más adecuado a fin de especificar el curso que va desde el pensamiento general humanístico hasta sus posibilidades prácticas educativas y de lenguaje.

So wrote the sixteenth-century Spanish humanist Juan Luis Vives in a famous work dedicated to Henry VIII's daughter, Princess Mary, but intended for a wider audience interested in the education of women. Praised by Erasmus and Thomas More, Vives advocated education for all women, regardless of social class and ability. From childhood through adolescence to marriage and widowhood, this manual offers practical advice as well as philosophical meditation and was recognized soon after publication in 1524 as the most authoritative pronouncement on the universal education of women. Arguing that women were intellectually equal if not superior to men, Vives stressed intellectual companionship in marriage over procreation, and moved beyond the private sphere to show how women's progress was essential for the good of society and state.
