El marco geográfico que utiliza la autora para abordar este minucioso estudio de la medicina popular en España abarca Galicia, Extremadura, Andalucía y el País Vasco, aunque ha utilizado también materiales que conciernen a casi todas las regiones españolas, y aun de Portugal y Francia, para aclarar y profundizar en los temas. Por otra parte, la comparación entre los conceptos y terapia característicos de España y Latinoamérica, aporta nuevos datos para que la discusión acerca de su origen europeo o americano se centre y se enriquezca. Los límites y las conexiones entre brujería y curanderismo aparecen resaltados con nitidez a partir del nuevo modelo teórico que propone la autora para algunos conceptos de enfermedad, principalmente el mal de ojo, los endemoniados y las distintas terapias de curación. Actualmente, en la asistencia institucionalizada rural y en la urbana, la oferta de la medicina popular cubre lagunas regionales y sociales del sistema sanitario o bien forma un sistema alternativo que se puede utilizar paralelamente a la asistencia sanitaria estatal. Ingrid Kuschick (Alemania, 1962) estudió etnología, historia moderna y geografía en Münster (M.A. 1988), Londres y Friburgo. Como antropóloga, presta especial atención a temas relacionados con las culturas hispanas y mediterráneas en los campos de la etnomedicina, el desarrollo y la museología.
